dUTPase is essential in zebrafish development and possesses several single‐nucleotide variants with pronounced structural and functional consequences

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
dUTPases are involved in balancing the appropriate nucleotide pools. We showed that dUTPase is essential for normal development in zebrafish. The different zebrafish genomes contain several single‐nucleotide variations (SNPs) of the dut gene. One of the dUTPase variants displayed drastically lower protein stability and catalytic efficiency as compared ...

Advances in Platelet Counting

open access: yesHematology, 2001
Accurate and reliable platelet counting is critical for the clinical management of platelet disorders, especially in thrombocytopenia. The platelet count is used to determine if the patient requires a platelet transfusion. As the prophylactic transfusion trigger is now set anywhere between 10-20 × 10(9)/L (depending upon the institution) it is ...

Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

Mean Platelet Volume and the Ratio of Mean Platelet Volume/Platelet Count in Acute Rheumatic Fever

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Research, 2021
Aim:Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is an endemic disease especially in developing countries. Due to an autoimmune response to group B streptococcus throat infection, ARF develops in susceptible children. Mean platelet volume (MPV) reflects the platelet size

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Lusutrombopag for Chronic Liver Disease Based on Pre‐Treatment Platelet Counts: A Retrospective Multicenter Study

open access: yesJGH Open
Background Oral thrombopoietin receptor agonists are used to treat thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic liver disease who are scheduled for invasive procedures. The efficacy of lusutrombopag based on the pretreatment platelet count was investigated.
