Platelet reactivity, fibrinogen and smoking

40 young healthy male volunteers (20 habitual smokers and 20 non‐smokers) were investigated with respect to platelet reactivity, plasma fibrinogen and coagulation factor VIII. Smokers had significantly lower systolic blood pressures and higher venous platelet counts.

The effects of brief maximal exertion on platelet activation and reactivity have been studied in normal subjects. Although initial studies in seven subjects showed apparent exercise-induced platelet activation and enhanced platelet reactivity, these findings could not be confirmed in 13 subjects studied subsequently.

Evaluation of Platelet Reactivity in Diabetes Mellitus

ABSTRACT. Seventeen patients with insulin‐dependent diabetes mellitus, all below the age of 45 years, were studied. Five of them had retinopathy but no other micro‐ or macrovascular diabetic complications. None of them had any other concurrent disorder or were on any medication but insulin.
