Refractoriness of diabetic platelets to inhibitory prostaglandins

Prostaglandins and Medicine, 1981
Inhibition of collagen-induced platelet aggregation by either endothelial extracts, prostacyclin, prostaglandin E1 or prostaglandin D2 was investigated. The inhibition was less efficient with diabetic platelets than with platelets from normal donors. The refractoriness of diabetic platelets to inhibitory prostaglandins was observed both with platelet ...

The evaluation and management of platelet refractoriness and alloimmunization

Transfusion Medicine Reviews, 2000
T HE ARREST of hemorrhage associated with an increase in the patient's platelet count after blood transfusion was first reported by Duke in 1910.' It was not until the 1960s that clinical studies showed that therapeutic platelet transfusions decreased fatal hemorrhagic complications in thrombocytopenic patients2 and that prophylactic platelet ...

Management of Patients Refractory to Platelet Transfusion

Journal of Infusion Nursing, 2007
This article discusses the causes and management of platelet refractoriness. Improvements in the quality of platelets and leukoreduction have reduced the morbidity and mortality related to alloimmunization and refractoriness of patients to platelet transfusion.

Alloimmune refractoriness to platelet transfusions

Current Opinion in Hematology, 1997
Patients who are transfused on multiple occasions with red cells or platelets may develop platelet-reactive alloantibodies and experience decreased clinical responsiveness to platelet transfusion. This situation, conventionally described as "refractoriness to platelet transfusions," is defined by an unsatisfactory low post-transfusion platelet count ...

Transfusion of ABO‐mismatched platelets leads to early platelet refractoriness

British Journal of Haematology, 1990
Summary. Forty‐three consecutive patients previously unexposed to platelets and undergoing treatment for acute leukaemia or autografting for relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma were randomized to receive transfused platelets of either their own ABO group (OG) or of a major mismatched group (MMG).

Refractory Response to Platelet Transfusion Therapy

Journal of Infusion Nursing, 2010
Platelet transfusions are commonly used for prophylaxis and treatment of bleeding. After a transfusion, an increment or "boost" is expected to occur. While a number of factors can contribute to a poor posttransfusion increment, refractoriness is typically defined as failure to achieve an appropriate increment after receiving 2 consecutive transfusions ...

Diagnosis and management of refractoriness to platelet transfusion

Blood Reviews, 2001
Improvements in the availability and quality of platelet transfusions have markedly reduced the morbidity and mortality associated with intensive myelosuppressive therapy. Alloimmunization and refractoriness to platelet transfusion remains a significant clinical problem, although the incidence of alloimmunization may be declining due to more widespread

Mouse Models of Platelet Alloimmunization and Refractoriness

We have established murine models of platelet alloimmunization and refractoriness. Our approaches utilize commonly available strains of mice, along with flow cytometry-based techniques to evaluate the magnitude and quality of the alloimmune response to platelet transfusion and the functional outcomes of these alloresponses.

Algorithm for managing the platelet refractory patient

Journal of Clinical Apheresis, 1997
Refractoriness to platelet transfusions continues to be a major problem for many thrombocytopenic patients. A proposed algorithm for managing these patients is presented which proceeds from easily instituted changes in platelet transfusion therapy such as provision of ABO-compatible and "fresh" platelet transfusions to the more difficult and costly ...

Platelet Refractory State Induced by Heparin

Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1972
Addition of heparin to whole blood caused marked platelet aggregation, followed by rapid deaggregation during subsequent tilting. Some platelets, however, were irreversibly aggregated. Heparin also induced aggregation in citrated platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), and enhanced aggregation by adrenaline and collagen in citrated PRP.
