Application of gradient elasticity to benchmark problems of beam vibrations

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, 2016
The gradient approach, specifically gradient elasticity theory, is adopted to revisit certain typical configurations on mechanical vibrations. New results on size effects and scale-dependent behavior not captured by classical elasticity are derived ...

Exact 3D solutions and finite element 2D models for free vibration analysis of plates and cylinders

open access: yesCurved and Layered Structures, 2014
The paper proposes a comparison between classical two-dimensional (2D) finite elements (FEs) and an exact three-dimensional (3D) solution for the free vibration analysis of one-layered and multilayered isotropic, composite and sandwich plates and ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

The plate-to-rod transition in trabecular bone loss is elusive

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2021
Changes in trabecular micro-architecture are key to our understanding of osteoporosis. Previous work focusing on structure model index (SMI) measurements have concluded that disease progression entails a shift from plates to rods in trabecular bone, but ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

A nonlocal sinusoidal plate model for micro/nanoscale plates

open access: yes, 2014
A nonlocal sinusoidal plate model for micro/nanoscale plates is developed based on Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory and sinusoidal shear deformation plate theory.

Shape Optimisation of Assembled Plate Structures with the Boundary Element Method

open access: yesAerospace, 2022
A novel methodology is presented for performing sensitivity analyses of assembled plate structures using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). The main novelty of this work is that the exact implicit derivatives of the BEM formulations for assembled plate ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
