Settlement Analysis of a Large Pile Group Supporting an LNG Storage Tank
ABSTRACT Liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks are often supported by large pile groups (>100 piles). The design of such foundations is generally governed by settlement rather than bearing capacity. However, minimal information is available regarding the settlement performance of the LNG tank foundations. This article first presents a comprehensive

Kinematic Limit Analysis of Roof Stability for Elliptical Tunnels in Rock Masses
ABSTRACT Noncircular cross‐sections are commonly encountered in engineering practice; however, primary attempts to analyze roof stability have focused on circular and rectangular configurations. This study investigates the roof stability of elliptical tunnels with varying aspect ratios, employing two semi‐analytical approaches: piecewise linear and ...

Abstract Monitoring external loads on underground structures is crucial for structural health assessment. Inverting earth pressures from observable structural responses, such as deformation data, holds promise. However, existing methods often rely on presumptions about pressure complexity, which can be infeasible for many poorly performing in‐service ...

This study evaluates the effectiveness of soil–cement reinforcement configurations in deep excavations using 2D FEM analysis. It investigates two different approaches to represent soil–cement reinforcement and compares them, showing that blocks reduce lateral deflections by 60%–64% and bending moments by 22% compared to columns.

Photogrammetric documentation in tunneling
Abstract Photogrammetric surveys for geological excavation documentation are standard practice in tunnel construction, benefiting from the sector's ongoing digitalization. However, the application of photogrammetry often remains confined to geological assessments. By creating comprehensive 3D models of excavated tunnels, it is also possible to evaluate
