Assessing the intensity of Late Quaternary humid phases in the Nefud Desert, northern Arabia

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The climate history of the major dryland zones of the world, such as the Saharo–Arabian Desert belt, plays a key role in the dispersal of early humans through these intermittently inhospitable regions. Here, we assess the relative intensity of Late Quaternary humid phases in northern Arabia through lithological, geochemical, palaeoecological ...

Indirect effects of fast‐growing urban development on wildlife in a coastal protected area of Costa Rica

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We studied the effects of urban growth on wildlife near Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas, Costa Rica. Since 1991, buildings increased 1007%, mainly in the buffer zone. We identified eight native species extracting garbage from containers, with raccoons (Procyon lotor) comprising most detections (84%), and four other species being potential sea turtle ...

Studying the Stability of the Proximity and Interaction Effect between Geomorphic Systems of Alluvial and Aeolian Landforms in Petergan Playa

open access: yesجغرافیا و پایداری محیط, 2020
The natural contrast between alluvial and aeolian geomorphic systems on the western margin of the Petergan Playa creates a balanced and stable environmental condition, while human intervention in the one of these systems leads to environmental ...

Evaluating land–sea linkages using land cover change and coral reef monitoring data: A case study from northeastern Puerto Rico

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Land cover change that leads to increased nutrient and sediment runoff is an important driver of change in coral reef ecosystems. In this study, we combined satellite remote sensing and field monitoring to assess concomitant changes in watershed land cover and coral cover in northeastern Puerto Rico in 2000–2015.

Isolation, Insularity and Resilience: A Review of the Geophysical, Socioeconomic, and Environmental Vulnerabilities of Gran Canaria and Lesvos Islands for Policy Interventions to Global Change

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The dynamic nature of small islands being geographically isolated and their perceived connectedness with global networks complicates research attempts to draw general conclusions on whether insularity leads to marginalization or strengthens their resilience for sustainable development.

Scaling from microsite to landscape to resolve litter decomposition dynamics in globally extensive drylands

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Decomposition is the transformation of dead organic matter into its inorganic constituents. In most biomes, decomposition rates can be accurately predicted with simple mathematical models, but these models have long under‐predicted decomposition in globally extensive ...

Soil wetting and drying processes influence stone artefact distribution in clay‐rich soils: A case study from Middle Gidley Island in Murujuga, northwest Western Australia

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Soils that contain swelling clay minerals (e.g., montmorillonite) expand and contract during wetting and drying, causing movement within the soil profile. This process, known as argilliturbation, can alter artefact distributions, destroy stratigraphy and complicate the interpretation of archaeological deposits.
