Blind Source Separation via Time‐Frequency Localization on Sound Spectrogram for Environmental Sound Source Attribution

open access: yesCAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As urban sound environments grow more complex, environmental monitoring increasingly demands not just sound‐level measurement but also source attribution. Current source recognition techniques can identify which sources are present in a mixture, but cannot measure each source's energy contribution, making accountability impossible.

Sexual selection for both diversity and repetition in birdsong

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
From fiddler crabs to humans, animals perform repetitive displays showing neuromotor skill and vigour. Consistent repetition of identical notes (vocal consistency) facilitates the assessment of neuromotor skills and is important in communication in birds.

The influence of motion quality on responses towards video playback stimuli

open access: yesBiology Open, 2015
Visual motion, a critical cue in communication, can be manipulated and studied using video playback methods. A primary concern for the video playback researcher is the degree to which objects presented on video appear natural to the non-human subject ...

Startling ravens Corvus corax at foraging: differences in anti‐predator behaviour can be explained by age rather than personality

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology
When individuals of the same population do not respond uniformly to the same situation, they might experience divergent fitness outcomes, such as different survival rates when facing danger.

The Tax‐Equivalent Effect of Information: Evidence From an Incentivised Laboratory Experiment on Sugary Drinks

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Interventions to reduce consumption of sugar‐sweetened beverages have been a popular topic of research in agricultural economics and food policy in recent years. While most empirical attention has focused on excise taxation and quasi‐experimental evaluation of implemented taxes, less is known about the magnitude of behavioural responses to ...

Effect of Morphology and Spatial Distribution of Males on Vocal Identity in a Non‐Learning African Wood Dove

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Emerald‐spotted Wood‐Dove songs show strong individual vocal signatures. Morphology explains little acoustic variation. Acoustic divergence increases with geographic distance between males, while local neighbor density does not influence vocal distinctiveness.

Multiple Community Informants Enhance Public Information About Predators Across a Latitudinal Gradient in Bird Communities of China

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We investigated bird communities across a 1650‐km latitudinal gradient in China where there is a transition in which “community informant” species play important roles in providing public information about predation, from babblers in the south to tits in the north. We found that both babblers and tits jointly contribute vocalizations when they are both

Weekend Overload: Day‐to‐Day Fluctuations of Outdoor Recreation Affect Wild Mammals' Space‐Use in a Popular Forest Reserve Near Florence, Italy

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
In an urban‐adjacent forested area, we investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of the wild mammal community in relation to day‐to‐day fluctuations of human presence occurring between working days and weekends. We deployed 52 camera‐traps systematically within an EU Natura 2000 area located within the metropolitan area of Florence, central ...

Playback Experiments

open access: yes, 2017
Field playback experiments are a powerful way to tap into nonhuman primates' communication and cognition in their natural environment. From the animals' responses, researchers can infer how animals categorize and respond to different sounds, while controlling for other available information.

Movement Responses of Seals During Pile Driving for Offshore Wind Farm Construction

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Despite rapid growth of the renewable energy industry to meet climate change targets, predictions of population‐level impacts on wildlife are currently hindered by a limited understanding of individual behavioural responses to these developments.
