Abstract Aim Gene flow from central to edge populations is thought to limit population growth at range edges by constraining local adaptation. In this study, we explore the thesis that range edges can differ in their dynamics and be either ‘hard’ (e.g. a river) or ‘soft’ (e.g. ecological gradients).

Specialist or refugee: Microhabitat use and competition between two sympatric woodland salamanders
The Northern Ravine Salamander (top left; Plethodon electromorphus), the far less abundant species, occupied microhabitat conditions nested within the spatial and environmental breadth of the Eastern Red‐backed Salamander (bottom right; Plethodon cinereus). Photo by Calen Campbell.

Status of some populations of Mexican salamanders (Amphibia: Plethodontidae)

Status of some populations of Mexican salamanders (Amphibia: Plethodontidae)
Populations of Mexican plethodontid salamanders have been surveyed non-systematically over the last 25 years. In light of many reports of disappearance of amphibians around the world, we checked for persistence of reported species at ten of these sites ...

We report for the first time multitrophic interaction among Thamnophis sumichrasti (Squamata, Natricidae), Isthmura gigantea (Caudata, Plethodontidae), and Megacormus gerstchi (Scorpiones, Euscorpiidae), three endemic, rare and endangered species that ...

Consistency in trophic strategies between populations of the Sardinian endemic salamander Speleomantes imperialis [PDF]
The study of trophic ecology of terrestrial salamanders is central for a better understanding of their adaptability and dispersal, in particular in Mediterranean ecosystems where their feeding activity is reduced because of prolonged arid periods ...

Ecomorphology of familiy Plethodontidae (Amphibia: Caudata) in America: the state of art
Ecomorphological studies are essential to understanding how a species perform in an environment according to its morphology, allowing for further understanding of adaptation patterns and evolutionary diversification. Salamanders in the family

Salamanders have developed a wide variety of antipredator mechanisms, including tail autotomy, colour patterns, and noxious skin secretions. As an addition to these tactics, the red-legged salamander (Plethodon shermani) uses adhesive secretions as part ...
