Validity of non-invasive methods for body composition measurements in older adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the validity of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) in relation to dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (i.e. the reference standard).

Rodent Breathing Waveforms in ApoE Rats: Statistical and Entropic Differentiation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene variations are involved in lipid metabolism and cholesterol transport, with the ApoE4 allele being a known risk factor associated with neurodegenerative conditions later in life. Emerging evidence suggests these genetic variations may also influence respiratory function and vitality.

Pulmonary artery stiffness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) and emphysema: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) COPD Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and particularly emphysema are characterized by stiffness of the aorta, due in part to accelerated elastin degradation in the lungs and aorta. Stiffness of the pulmonary arteries (PAs) may also be

Stable determination of the surface impedance of an obstacle by far field measurements [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2005
We deal with the inverse scattering problem of determining the surface impedance of a partially coated obstacle. We prove a stability estimate of logarithmic type for the impedance term by the far field measurements.

Low‐dose ASA therapy does not alter core or skin temperature during hot‐dry or warm‐humid heat stress (PSU HEAT project)

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 9, May 2025.
Abstract Nearly 40% of US adults over the age of 50 use aspirin (ASA) therapy for the primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Systemic platelet cyclooxygenase inhibition with low‐dose ASA attenuates reflex cutaneous vasodilation and accelerates the rate of rise of core temperature during passive heating in middle‐aged adults.

Dietary intakes and body composition of Māori and Pacific women in the women's EXPLORE study : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics, Massey University, Albany, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The most thorough record of dietary intake among New Zealand (NZ) Māori and Pacific women was undertaken in the 2008 NZ Adult Nutrition Survey, but it did not consider the relationship with body composition.

Using data collected from structured light plethysmography to differentiate breathing pattern disorder from normal breathing: A study group report [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This report relates to a study group hosted by the EPSRC funded network, Integrating data-driven BIOphysical models into REspiratory MEdicine (BIOREME), and supported by SofTMech and Innovate UK, Business Connect. This report summarises the work undertaken on a challenge presented by two of the authors, Mathew Bulpett and Dr Emily Fraser.

Oscillometry with or without spirometry for methacholine testing

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 10, May 2025.
Abstract Oscillometry is proposed as a complementary technique to spirometry for methacholine testing. Yet, before being prescribed in conjunction with spirometry, the extent by which the oscillometric readouts are influenced by spirometric maneuvers, especially the deep inspirations, will need to be determined.
