Thrombospondin‐4 is upregulated in abdominal aortic aneurysm: A vasoprotective response with potential therapeutic relevance

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
TSP4 is upregulated in human and experimental AAA. TSP4 knockdown accelerated AAA formation and exacerbated both vascular inflammation and remodelling, emphasizing that TSP4 upregulation may represent a protective response against AAA. Our findings suggest that preserving TSP4 could be a useful strategy in the clinical management of AAA.

Role of aldehyde dehydrogenase in hypoxic vasodilator effects of nitrite in rats and humans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Hypoxic conditions favour the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide (NO) to elicit vasodilatation, but the mechanism(s) responsible for bioconversion remains ill defined.

Pharmacological treatment with a GABA(A) receptor modulator and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor as a mitigation strategy against aircraft noise‐induced cardiovascular and neuronal damage

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose Noise pollution, particularly by aircraft, is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Aircraft noise activates stress response pathways in the brain, via the amygdala, the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.

The inspiratory capacity/total lung capacity ratio as a predictor of survival in an emphysematous phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BackgroundForced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) grades severity of COPD and predicts survival. We hypothesize that the inspiratory capacity/total lung capacity (IC/TLC) ratio, a sensitive measure of static lung hyperinflation, may have a ...

Dual pharmacological targeting of coactivator‐associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) and salt inducible kinase (SIK) drives ketogenesis in both hepatocytes and mice

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose Ketone bodies are liver‐derived circulating energy metabolites that positively impact most hallmarks of ageing. Ketone bodies increase during calorie restriction and fasting, two of the more widely perceived methods to increase health span.
