The oldest records of crown-Pleurodira turtles were from the Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) of northeastern Brazil and northern Africa. Recently, a new side-necked turtle was reported from the Morro do Chaves Formation, Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Brazil, extending the First Occurrence Datum of that crown-clade to the Barremian.

Karyotypic Variation in the Genus Platemys (Testudines: Pleurodira)

Standard karyotypes are reported for all currently recognized members of the South American genus Platemys. Platemys platycephala (2n = 64) has a karyotype distinct from the other four members of the genus (P. macrocephala, 2n = 48; P. pallidipectoris, P. radiolata, P. spixii 2n = 50).

The aim of this study is to describe the feeding patterns of the pleurodiran West African mud turtle Pelusios castaneus. The kinematics of feeding were studied for two types of prey (fish, snail) to provide a description of the feeding cycle and to determine whether kinematic patterns can be altered in response to prey size and type.

Karyotypes of side-necked turtles (Testudines: Pleurodira)

Karyotypes are presented for 13 of the 14 genera of side-necked turtles (suborder Pleurodira, families Pelomedusidae and Chelidae). Pelomedusids have low diploid numbers and few microchromosomes (2n = 26–36); the five largest chromosomes are homologous in the three genera.
