Plexiform neurofibromas in childhood

Abstract Sixteen cases of plexiform neurofibroma occurring in childhood have been discussed. Of lesions in the trunk or extremities, only two required multiple procedures, including a below-the-knee amputation. All patients are free of tumor at present, though they carry other stigmata of Von Recklinghausen's disease.

Epicranial plexiform neurofibroma.

Epicranial plexiform neurofibroma is a rare presentation of neurofibromatosis. Two such cases are presented in which epicranial tumors constituted isolated manifestations of the disease except for skin pigmentation. Tumor development began at two and three months of age respectively; one case showed a calvarian bony defect associated with the tumor.

Plexiform trigeminal neurofibroma.

Neurofibromas of the trigeminal nerve are uncommon tumours which usually present in patients in the third or fourth decade of life as a localised mass in the posterior or middle cranial fossa. A case is described of a plexiform neurofibroma of this nerve with unusual clinical and radiological features.
