Personal time in alternative and time travel narrative: The cases of Groundhog Day, Twelve Monkeys and 2001: A Space Odyssey

open access: yesAlphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media, 2012
In alternative and time travel narratives, our everyday conception of time is often challenged. Similarly, in counterfactual history, various parallel realities exist. In time travel narrative, it is possible to travel in the past or in the future.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Dimension Reduction Regression in R

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Software, 2002
Regression is the study of the dependence of a response variable y on a collection predictors p collected in x. In dimension reduction regression, we seek to find a few linear combinations β1x,...,βdx, such that all the information about the regression ...

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Practical data connection between MATLAB and microcontrollers using virtual serial port and MicroPython Pyboard: A survey

open access: yesIET Circuits, Devices and Systems, 2021
In this paper, a simple and practical method to hookup between Pyboard and computer using MicroPython and MATLAB is presented. With the presented way, MATLAB can connect to Pyboard with virtual serial port (VSP).

Individual Tree Crown Segmentation and Crown Width Extraction From a Heightmap Derived From Aerial Laser Scanning Data Using a Deep Learning Framework

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2022
Deriving individual tree crown (ITC) information from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data is of great significance to forest resource assessment and smart management.

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

A modified equation for calculating low density lipoprotein cholesterol in Pakistani population

open access: yesKhyber Medical University Journal, 2023
OBJECTIVE: To derive an equation for accurate estimation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol  (LDL-C) in the Pakistani population. METHODS: A modified equation was derived on the dataset (n = 59,148) from the Pakistani population, comprising ...

Weak limits for exploratory plots in the analysis of extremes [PDF]

open access: yesBernoulli 2013, Vol. 19, No. 1, 308-343, 2010
Exploratory data analysis is often used to test the goodness-of-fit of sample observations to specific target distributions. A few such graphical tools have been extensively used to detect subexponential or heavy-tailed behavior in observed data. In this paper we discuss asymptotic limit behavior of two such plotting tools: the quantile-quantile plot ...

Ion channel function of polycystin‐2/polycystin‐1 heteromer revealed by structure‐guided mutagenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in polycystin‐1 (PC1) or polycystin‐2 (PC2) cause autosomal‐dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We generated a novel gain‐of‐function PC2/PC1 heteromeric ion channel by mutating pore‐blocking residues. Moreover, we demonstrated that PC2 will preferentially assemble with PC1 to form heteromeric complexes when PC1 is co‐expressed ...
