Interpreting a Legacy Fossil Assemblage Excavated From Waribruk (New Guinea II Cave), GunaiKurnai Aboriginal Country, Snowy River National Park, Southeastern Australia

open access: yesArchaeology in Oceania, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this paper we report on faunal remains recovered from a legacy archaeological excavation undertaken in the rockshelter entrance of Waribruk (New Guinea II Cave), a GunaiKurnai site located on the west bank of the Snowy River, East Gippsland, southeastern Australia.

Morphological characterization with special reference to color variations in domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus)

open access: yesIndian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2016
A study was planned to record and document the morphological characteristics with special reference to color variations in domestic geese. Knob, dewlap and paunch were present in 44.71, 3.07 and 13.59 % of birds respectively.

Fasting and Refeeding Mediated Phospholipid Remodeling Plays an Important Role in Improving Meat Quality of Aged Laying Hens

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explored fasting‐induced physiological remodeling effects on meat quality in aged laying hens. Fasting for 15 days (F15) significantly reduced abdominal fat, intermuscular fat width, subcutaneous fat thickness, and liver index versus pre‐fasting (F0) (p < 0.05), which recovered post‐refeeding.

Growth Rate and Plumage Color in Chickens

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1956
Abstract THE I-gene, an inhibitor of black (melanin) color, is currently being used in the development of the popular “dominant white” crossbreds for broiler production. Since none of the competitive meat strains posessed this gene, poultry breeders have introduced it into sire lines by crossbreeding.

Heat Stress and Gut Microbiome Dynamics in Poultry: Interplay, Consequences, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts gut microbial balance in poultry, impairing nutrient absorption and immunity. This review outlines the interplay between thermal stress and microbiome dynamics and discusses integrative mitigation strategies, probiotics, phytogenics, cooling systems, and genetic adaptation to enhance poultry resilience.

Inheritance of plumage colour in Japanese quails

open access: yesIndian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2016
A complete 4 × 4 diallel cross involving 4 quail populations, 2 of which possessed Pharao, plumage and other 2, White breasted and White plumage pattern was performed and the plumage colour of progeny in different crosses was recorded.

The color of greater flamingo feathers fades when no cosmetics are applied

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Greater flamingos use cosmetic coloration by spreading uropygial secretions pigmented with carotenoids over their feathers, which makes the plumage redder.

Marine silicon for biomedical sustainability

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Schematic illustrating marine silicon for biomedical engineering. Abstract Despite momentous divergence from oceanic origin, human beings and marine organisms exhibit elemental homology through silicon utilization. Notably, silicon serves as a critical constituent in multiple biomedical processes.

The costs of extra‐pair behaviours in birds

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Extra‐pair behaviours – reproductive behaviours, including those related to copulation and paternity of offspring, amongst animals outside of a social pair bond – have long intrigued behavioural ecologists, particularly from the female animal's perspective.

Identification of polymorphisms in and genes and their associations with plumage colors in Asian duck breeds [PDF]

open access: yesAsian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2018
Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the melanogenesis associated transcription factor (MITF) and dopachrome tautomerase (DCT) genes on plumage coloration in Asian native duck breeds ...
