Wall‐to‐wall Amazon forest height mapping with Planet NICFI, Aerial LiDAR, and a U‐Net regression model

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 12, Issue 3, Page 323-348, June 2026.
Tree canopy height is a key indicator of forest biomass and structure, yet accurate mapping across the Amazon remains challenging. Here, we generated a canopy height map of the Amazon forest at ~4.8 m resolution using Planet NICFI imagery and a deep learning U‐Net model trained with airborne LiDAR data.

Charting a Transformational Course Toward a Safe and Just Future: The Earth Commission's Contribution

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Humans are now operating well outside the planetary conditions under which social and economic development has been possible. A precondition for securing equitable access to this prosperity is to safeguard the stability of the Earth system. The situation is urgent—we need a swift and profound shift in direction—a collective transformation.

Differential Health Impacts of Short‐Term Particulate Matter Exposure in Arid and Semi‐Arid Regions: A Scoping Review

open access: yesGeoHealth, Volume 10, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Particulate matter (PM) exposure is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality across the world. While arid and semi‐arid regions account for more than 40% of terrestrial land, there is a paucity of research investigating the relationship between PM exposure and health outcomes or how risk varies across ...

Landowners' Willingness to Participate in Temporary and Permanent Agri‐Environmental Schemes

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, Volume 77, Issue 2, Page 615-631, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Within the EU and beyond, voluntary agri‐environmental and climate schemes (AES) are used to curtail externalities from agricultural production including nitrate leaching, biodiversity degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper investigates and compares Danish landowners' preferences for temporary and permanent AES using a choice ...

A terrestrial laser scanning‐based workflow for component‐wise estimation of individual tree above‐ground biomass

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 6, Page 1938-1949, June 2026.
Abstract Accurate estimation of individual tree above‐ground biomass (AGB) and its component‐wise allocation is crucial for advancing ecological research and forest management. However, current biomass estimation methods, such as destructive sampling and allometric equation–based approaches, face limitations in both operational efficiency and cost ...
