Nitrogen Redox Controls on Greenhouse Gas Production in Yedoma Taliks
Arctic Yedoma permafrost holds large carbon and nitrogen pools that, when thawed, undergo microbially mediated processes that release greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide. We analyzed seasonal shifts in microbial community dynamics and geochemistry in deep thawed soils (talik) and found year‐round methane production, with limited winter ...

Identification of Endophytic Bacterial Community Associated With Roots of Desert Vegetation
ABSTRACT Native plants thriving in extreme environments host unique microbial communities that might play crucial roles in promoting their growth and enhancing tolerance to harsh environmental conditions. In this study, the root‐associated microbial communities were analysed from ten desert native plant species.

Draft genome sequence of uncultured upland soil cluster gammaproteobacteria gives molecular insights into high-affinity methanotrophy [PDF]
Aerated soils form the second largest sink for atmospheric CH₄. A nearcomplete genome of uncultured upland soil cluster Gammaproteobacteria that oxidize CH₄ at 2.5 ppmv was obtained from incubated Antarctic mineral cryosols.

Sphagnum moss, typical of northern peatlands, produces a range of volatile organic compounds, principally the climate‐active compound, isoprene, which serves as a carbon source for specialist isoprene‐consuming microbes. Using an inhibitor of microbial isoprene uptake, we quantify gross isoprene production by the moss and show that the vast majority of

A pmoA-based study reveals dominance of yet uncultured Type I methanotrophs in rhizospheres of an organically fertilized rice field in India [PDF]
Rice fields are one of the important sources of anthropogenic methane. Methanotrophs can oxidize up to 30 % of the produced methane and thus have a pivotal environmental role in methane mitigation. India occupies the largest region under rice cultivation; however, most of the studies done on methanotrophic communities have focused on the Northern ...

Microorganisms carrying cbbL, pmoA and coxL genes play crucial roles in regulating soil-atmosphere exchanges of carbon trace gases (CO2, CH4, and CO). However, the geographical distribution patterns of these functional genes in agricultural ecosystems ...

Methanotrophs from natural ecosystems as biocontrol agents for ruminant methane emissions [PDF]
In ruminant cattle, the anaerobic fermentation of ingested plant biomass results in the production of methane (CH4). This CH4 is subsequently eructated to the environment, where it acts as a potent greenhouse gas and is one of the leading sources of ...

Mediterranean inland saline shallow lakes are divided into different categories according to their salinity and conservation status, which determine the structuration of the prokaryotic communities and their carbon‐related metabolisms. ABSTRACT Mediterranean inland saline lakes may play an important role in the carbon cycle due to the metabolic ...

Straw returns to the soil is an effective way to improve soil organic carbon and reduce air pollution by straw burning, but this may increase CH4 and N2O emissions risks in paddy soils.
