Treatment of Severe Adenovirus Infection With HAdV‐B21 in a Young Obese Male With Normal Immunity
ABSTRACT Adenovirus infections are usually mild, but rare serotypes like “HAdV‐B21” can cause severe pneumonia even in healthy individuals. We report a 32‐year‐old immunocompetent obese male who developed life‐threatening HAdV‐B21 pneumonia (PaO2/FiO2 62 mmHg), requiring mechanical ventilation.

A New Name for Pneumocystis from Humans and New Perspectives on the Host-Pathogen Relationship
The disease known as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is a major cause of illness and death in persons with impaired immune systems. While the genus Pneumocystis has been known to science for nearly a century, understanding of its members remained ...

Comparative genomics suggests that the human pathogenic fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii acquired obligate biotrophy through gene loss. [PDF]
Pneumocystis jirovecii is a fungal parasite that colonizes specifically humans and turns into an opportunistic pathogen in immunodeficient individuals. The fungus is able to reproduce extracellularly in host lungs without eliciting massive cellular death.

A case of idiosyncratic drug‐induced agranulocytosis because of sulbactam/ampicillin
We report a case of agranulocytosis caused by sulbactam/ampicillin. During antimicrobial therapy, close monitoring of total white blood cell counts is essential. Abstract Idiosyncratic drug‐induced agranulocytosis is a rare but life‐threatening condition that requires immediate medical intervention.

Association between a Specific Pneumocystis jiroveci Dihydropteroate Synthase Mutation and Failure of Pyrimethamine/Sulfadoxine Prophylaxis in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Positive and -Negative Patients [PDF]
To investigate the possible association between different prophylactic sulfa drugs and the genotype of the Pneumocystis jiroveci dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) gene, we examined DHPS polymorphisms in clinical specimens from 158 immunosuppressed patients
