Immunopathogenesis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia

Expert Reviews in Molecular Medicine, 2005
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is a life-threatening infection that occurs in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Interestingly, morbidity and mortality is related to the underlying cause of immunosuppression, with AIDS patients faring better than oncology patients for ...

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in siblings

The Journal of Pediatrics, 1970
Summary Two infant siblings with deficient immunoglobulins and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia are presented. One infant died from Pneumocystis infection; the other one survived following early diagnosis and treatment with pentamidine. This is apparently the sixth reported instance of Pneumocystis pneumonia in siblings.

Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia in a Family

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1965
PLASMA-CELL PNEUMONIA due to infection with Pneumocystis carinii is commonly seen in Europe but has been comparatively rare in North America. Recently, an increasingly large number of cases have been reported in the United States and Canada. Many cases have been quite sporadic; however, there are a few areas in which large numbers of cases have been ...

Diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia

Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, 1988
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia occurs at some point in the course of disease in approximately 85 per cent of patients with AIDS. Because of the frequency of P. carinii pneumonia and because it is readily treatable, prompt, accurate, and efficient diagnostic schemes are of extreme importance. The clinical presentation is generally characterized by fever,

Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia

Annals of Internal Medicine, 1968
Abstract Two patients with underlying lymphoreticular malignant processes were successfully treated for documented Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia with pentamidine isethionate. The diagnosis of pneumocystis infection was confirmed in each case by percutaneous pulmonary needle biopsy. Decreased renal function occurred on therapy in both patients; in one,

Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is apparently still rare in the United States, since only seven deaths from this cause have been unequivocally proved. The seventh of these cases, from the John Sealy Hospital, Galveston, Texas, brought to our attention this interesting and serious interstitial plasma-cell pneumonia which we had not heretofore recognized.

Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia in Children

Southern Medical Journal, 1979
Previous descriptions of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia have emphasized a variety of radiographic patterns which most often apply to advanced disease. We reviewed the chest roentgenograms of children taken at or just after the onset of clinical symptoms.
