The final results of experimental infections with virus recovered from the lungs of sheep suffering from progressive interstitial pneumonia (=zwoegerziekte=maedi) are reported. The virus could be reisolated from blood samples of all experimentally infected sheep. Every animal produced antibodies against the virus.

Progressive interstitial pneumonia (Maedi) of sheep in Kenya
Veterinary Record, 1970The disease is manifested clinically by dyspnoea, increased respiration rate, fits of coughing, fatigue and emaciation, and pathological and serological studies suggest that it is similar if not identical to Icelandic maedi. The characteristic lesions are those of a progressive interstitial pneumonia, often with pulmonary lymphoid hyperplasia.

The disease followed a course typical of chronic interstitial progressive pneumonia with reduced tonus, loss of body weight, and high lethality.
