Predator Environment Does Not Predict Life History in the Morphologically Constrained Fish Alfaro cultratus (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae)

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Predation is known to have a significant effect on life history diversification in a variety of species. However, physical constraints of body shape and size can sometimes limit life history divergence.

Mating and aggressive behaviour of Brachyrhaphis olomina (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Ethology, 2017
Abstract Despite the increasing interest in the use of intromittent male genitalia and coercive mating behaviour in poeciliids, detailed studies of the mating behaviour of most species in this family are lacking. We describe here the mating and aggressive behaviours of Brachyrhaphis olomina, and correlate them with the condition of the female’

Phylogenetic diversity and biodiversity indices on phylogenetic networks

open access: yes, 2018
In biodiversity conservation it is often necessary to prioritize the species to conserve. Existing approaches to prioritization, e.g. the Fair Proportion Index and the Shapley Value, are based on phylogenetic trees and rank species according to their ...

Freshwater fishes of the Waterberg aquatic ecoregion, South Africa: Diversity, taxonomic conflicts and conservation concerns

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Southern Africa is a region denoted by both high levels of fish diversity, some of it cryptic and unrecognised by current taxonomy, and severely threatened freshwater ecosystems. The Waterberg, a key aquatic ecoregion of the greater Limpopo River basin in South Africa, represents an area with high terrestrial conservation value but is lacking ...

The Impacts of Pregnancy on Cognition and Cell Proliferation in a Live‐Bearing Fish (Poeciliopsis gracilis)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 9, -Not available-.
We assessed the impact of pregnancy on cognition and cell proliferation in the live‐bearing fish Poeciliopsis gracilis. Pregnant females showed reduced spatial learning but unchanged reversal learning, alongside decreased cell proliferation in the olfactory bulb and ventral telencephalon, indicating pregnancy‐induced cognitive and neural changes in a ...

Biochemical Responses of Anopheles spp. Larvae to a Novel Brazilian BR101 Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis Formulation: Oxidative Stress, Detoxification Enzymes, and Safety for Nontarget Notonectidae and Gerridae Aquatic Insects

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 23, Issue 2, February 2026.
Bti BR101 exhibits strong larvicidal activity against Anopheles larvae spp., with dose‐dependent mortality and LC50 of 3.13 µg/mL. Bti increases ROS, lipid and protein oxidation, and activates antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx) and detoxification pathways (MFO and esterases), indicating moderate oxidative stress.
