A redescription of adult females of Ergasilus briani Markewitsch, 1933 (Copepoda: Poecilostomatoida)

The adult female of Ergasilus briani Markewitsch, 1933 (Crustacea: Copepoda) is redescribed using scanning electron and light microscopy. The taxonomic history of E. briani is reviewed. It is confirmed that E. briani and E. minor Halisch, 1934 are synonymous. The known distribution of E. briani in Britain is noted.

The gut structure and ultrastructure of Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930), a copepod from the family Ergasilidae (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida) and a parasite of fish, were compared at different periods of the life cycle: in free-living specimens in October and after attaching to fish in January and June.

The ultrastructure of the integument of the sapphirinid copepods was studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Samples were collected between 1991 and 1993 by plankton-net tows from the subtropical and tropical waters of the North Pacific.
