The discretization of the integrodifferential equation governing the evolution of a vortex sheet leads to a representation of the sheet by point vortices. It is shown, by examination of the special case of a uniform circular vortex sheet, that the chaotic motion which often arises when the point vortex representation is used is due to the amplification

Dynamics of uniform vortex patch with a point vortex [PDF]
Vortex dynamics in two-dimensional inviscid, incompressible fluids are isomorphic to the dynamics of strongly magnetized guiding center plasmas restricted to E /spl times/ B motion. In this paper, we exploit this analogy and study the dynamics of a uniform vortex patch with a point-like vortex using a particle-in-cell code.

Exotic vortex wakes—point vortex solutions
Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2006Abstract Von Karman was the first to present a quantitative model of the “vortex street” wake as a double row of point vortices, to determine which configurations propagate in the direction of the rows, and to consider the linear stability theory for such states. In the early literature one works with infinite rows of vortices.

Dynamics of a vortex pair interacting with a fixed point vortex [PDF]
The dynamics of a vortex pair consisting of two counter-rotating point vortices encountering a fixed point vortex in a uniform medium is addressed. This problem is of interest in part because such an interaction occurs frequently in geophysical flows. The vortex pair is shown to exhibit two different regimes of motion.

Convergence of a Point Vortex Method for Vortex Sheets
SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 1991Based on the observation that a point vortex approximation can be made spectrally accurate by using Van de Vooren’s desingularization, short time convergence of the point vortex method for both vortex sheets and the Boussinesq approximation are proved using analytic data.
