Occurrence of Polar Polycyclic Aromatic compounds at contaminated sites

open access: yes, 2014
International audienceBackground It has recently been recognized that soils contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may contain significant amounts of other polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) as well.

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Study on influence of supercritical solvent polarity on diffusivity of polar and non-polar aroma compounds using supercrincal fluid extraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is an available and promising technique used to extract volatile compounds from natural products. SFE can be increased by optimizing the process conditions such as pressure, temperature, solvent f10wrate and addition ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Reverse osmosis separation of polar organic compounds in aqueous solution

open access: yes, 1976
The reverse osmosis separation of polar organic compounds from water was examined. A total of 12 different reverse osmosis membranes were tested with 13 polar low-molecular-weight organic compounds consisting of various functional groups.

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Phytoplankton dynamics in the Barents Sea estimated from chlorophyll budget models

open access: yes, 1991
Pigment budgets use chlorophyll a and phaeopigment standing stock in combination with their photo-oxidation and sedimentation rates in the euphotic zone to estimate phytoplankton growth and grazing by micro- and macrozooplankton.
