Manakov solitons and polarization mode dispersion
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2000The effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on Manakov solitons and dispersion managed solitons is treated analytically and by numerical simulation. In the analytic approach the internal motion of the Manakov soliton is represented as a damped harmonic oscillator. The PMD functions as a white noise source driving the oscillations. It is shown that

Emulation and inversion of polarization-mode dispersion
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2003When a fiber is characterized by measured polarization mode dispersion (PMD) vector data, inversion of these data is required to determine the frequency dependence of the fiber's Jones matrix and, thereby, its pulse response. This tutorial reviews the principal concepts and theory employed in approaches to PMD inversion and in the closely related ...

We report the frequency dependence of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a PMD compensator based on six cascaded birefringent crystals separated by Faraday rotators. When all crystal axes are aligned, the device can compensate for the first-order PMD.

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a polarization-dependent variation of a material’s index of refraction. It leads to time delays and wavenumber differences between orthogonal polarization states of light at fixed wavelength. Classically, several methods have been developed for measuring PMD [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8].

Polarization mode dispersion emulator
Optical Fiber Communication Conference. Technical Digest Postconference Edition. Trends in Optics and Photonics Vol.37 (IEEE Cat. No. 00CH37079), 2002We investigate a new technique to realistically emulate polarization mode dispersion. We demonstrate that 15 sections of polarization-maintaining fiber with randomly rotatable connections emulates an almost ideal Maxwellian differential group delay (DGD) distribution, whereas fixed connections is inadequate.

Vector of polarization mode dispersion
SPIE Proceedings, 2002Investigating the Miller matrix in optical fiber, this paper derives, for the first time, the expression ofthe vector of PMD (polarization mode dispersion), expression of the Stocks vector of Principal State of Polarization (PSP), and expression of the high-order vector of PMD, which are determined by the parameters of fiber.

Nonlinear polarization-mode dispersion
Proceedings of Optical Fiber Communication Conference (, 2002Nonlinear effect of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) will become important in future transoceanic optical networks and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical path networks with optical amplifier repeaters. The nonlinear variation of transfer function matrix due to optical Kerr effect is very important because the birefringence of a very long ...

On the dynamics of polarization mode dispersion
Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit, 2003The PMD dynamics in aerial fiber can be well modeled by highly mode coupled wave-plates via the mode coupling angle fluctuation described by a Gaussian probability transition function. The RMS mode orientation angle undergoes a Brownian motion in aerial fiber.

Polarization mode dispersion in dispersion-shifted fibers: an exact analysis
Optics Letters, 1993Using an exact waveguide analysis and measured stress profiles, we show that a delicate interplay between form-induced and stress-induced contributions to polarization mode dispersion in dispersion-shifted fibers can significantly reduce intrinsic short-length polarization mode dispersions.

We analyze the performance of multisection fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulators based on random fiber sectioning and ordered sectioning, with the inclusion of second-order PMD in individual sections. Numerical simulations show that this inclusion leads to (1) an asymmetry in the autocorrelation function (ACF) that increases with the ...
