Three-Dimensional Polarization Ray Tracing and Diattenuation Calculation

Proceedings of SPIE, 2010
A three-by-three polarization ray tracing matrix P for calculating polarization transformations associated with ray paths through optical systems is presented. Diattenuation of the optical system is calculated via singular value decomposition of the P matrix.

Three-Dimensional Polarization Ray-Tracing Calculus II: Retardance

Applied Optics, 2011
The concept of retardance is critically analyzed for ray paths through optical systems described by a three-by-three polarization ray-tracing matrix. Algorithms are presented to separate the effects of retardance from geometric transformations.

Polarization Properties of a Corner-Cube Retroreflector With Three-Dimensional Polarization Ray-Tracing Calculus

Applied Optics, 2013
The output polarization states of corner cubes (for both uncoated and metal-coated surfaces) with an input beam of arbitrary polarization state and of arbitrary tilt angle to the cube have been analyzed by using the three-dimensional polarization ray-tracing matrix method. The diattenuation and retardance of the corner-cube retroreflector (CCR) for all

Retardance in Three-Dimensional Polarization Ray Tracing

Proceedings of SPIE, 2009
A three-by-three polarization ray tracing matrix P which is defined in global coordinates characterizes the polarization transformations associated with single ray through optical system. The P matrix contains both a geometrical transformation effect and the polarization characteristics of diattenuation and retardance from the optical and ...

Polarization Opposition Effect and Second-Order Ray Tracing

Applied Optics, 2002
I develop a second-order ray-tracing model of the light scattered by a cloud of randomly oriented facets having sizes much larger than the incident wavelength. My results suggest that both symmetric and asymmetric branches of the polarization opposition effect can be produced by the same mechanism responsible for the photometric opposition effect, i.e.,

Three-Dimensional Polarization Ray-Tracing Calculus I: Definition and Diattenuation

Applied Optics, 2011
A three-by-three polarization ray-tracing matrix method for polarization ray tracing in optical systems is presented for calculating the polarization transformations associated with ray paths through optical systems. The method is a three-dimensional generalization of the Jones calculus. Reflection and refraction algorithms are provided.

Shape Estimation of Transparent Objects by Using Inverse Polarization Ray Tracing

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2007
Few methods have been proposed to measure three-dimensional shapes of transparent objects such as those made of glass and acrylic. In this paper, we propose a novel method for estimating the surface shapes of transparent objects by analyzing the polarization state of the light.

Polarization Ray Tracing of Wave Fields

Frontiers in Optics, 2006
This tutorial gives an overview of methods used for modeling the propagation of the polarization properties of electromagnetic fields, and presents a new ray-based method. The validity and numerical efficiency of these methods are discussed. Article not available.

Ray tracing with polarization parameters

IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, 1990
Incorporating polarization parameters into the lighting model can enhance the physical realism of images rendered with a ray tracer. Polarization effects can be important in certain scenes, and the difference in rendering even simple scenes with and without proper treatment of polarization can be striking.

Polarization ray tracing in birefringent media

Optical Engineering, 1988
A method that uses a single algorithm to trace rays in isotropic media and both ordinary and extraordinary rays in uniaxial media is presented. This method is designed to be compatible with conventional raytracing algorithms so that it is easily integrated into existing ray-tracing programs.
