Polarization ray tracing in anisotropic optically active media

Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1991
We present algorithms for polarization ray tracing through uniaxial optically active crystals, such as quartz, in a form specifically suited for integration into optical design software. These algorithms incorporate ray directions, polarization modes, optical path lengths, and Fresnel transmission and reflection equations.

Ray Tracing and Use of Shadows as Features for Determining Location in Lunar Polar Terrain

2021
Ice is the most valuable resource on the Moon. It exists only at the poles where shadows are extensive and drivable routes are short. Robot routes to reach this ice are tenuous. Sun-synchronous lunar polar routes offer order-of-magnitude greater duration and range if such routes are achievable. Sun-synchrony is brittle in the sense that a rover must be

General polarized ray-tracing method for inhomogeneous uniaxially anisotropic media

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2008
Uniaxial optical anisotropy in the geometrical-optics approach is a classical problem, and most of the theory has been known for at least fifty years. Although the subject appears frequently in the literature, wave propagation through inhomogeneous anisotropic media is rarely addressed.

Parry arc: a polarization lidar, ray-tracing, and aircraft case study

Applied Optics, 2000
Using simple ray-tracing simulations, the cause of the rare Parry arc has been linked historically to horizontally oriented columns that display the peculiar ability to fall with a pair of prism faces closely parallel to the ground. Although we understand the aerodynamic forces that orient the long-column axis in the horizontal plane, which gives rise ...

Polarization ray tracing in thermally loaded solid-state laser crystals

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2020
A new ray tracing method for the propagation of electrical fields in inhomogeneous and weakly anisotropic media is presented. With this method, we can efficiently simulate the propagation of laser beams in solid-state laser amplifiers, which suffer from high thermal loads.

Investigation of propagation algorithms for ray-tracing simulation of polarized neutrons

Journal of Neutron Research, 2014
Ray-tracing of polarized neutrons faces a challenge when the neutron propagates through an inhomogeneous magnetic field. This affects simulations of novel instruments using encoding of energy or angle into the neutron spin. We here present a new implementation of propagation of polarized neutrons within the McStas simulation package and show that it ...

Improved polarization ray tracing of thin-film optical coatings

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Thin-film coatings in modern optical systems as wideband AR-coatings may have >10 layers and an optical thickness of several λ. Such complex thin-films may introduce pronounced changes in transmission phases with varying angles of incidence, polarization and/or wavelength. "Polarization ray tracing" as utilized by current optical design programs models

Study of orthogonal polarization approximation for ordinary and extraordinary rays in ray tracing for uniaxial crystals

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
We study the assumption of orthogonal polarization for ordinary and extraordinary rays inside uniaxial crystals, using a closed-form expression for the angle between the polarizations. We highlight that orthogonality holds only when the crystal axis is rather coplanar to the ordinary and extraordinary wave vectors or orthogonal to the extraordinary ...

Design of Depolarizers for Space-Borne Instruments by Birefringent Polarization Ray Tracing

International Optical Design Conference, 1994
Depolarizers have been designed using birefringent ray tracing. Their purpose is to increase the radiometric accuracy of space-borne instruments, such as radiometers and spectroradiometers, by reducing the linear polarization sensitivity induced by the optical system.
