Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Human Cells Using Fluorescent Polarizing Agents

open access: yes, 2018
Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) enables atomic-resolution characterization of the molecular structure and dynamics within complex heterogeneous samples, but it is typically insensitive.

Tuning Separator Chemistry: Improving Zn Anode Compatibility via Functionalized Chitin Nanofibers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanochitin derived from waste shrimp shells is used to fabricate separators for aqueous zinc batteries. By tuning the density of amine and carboxylic surface groups, water mobility at the separator interface is controlled, promoting uniform zinc deposition, suppressing dendrite growth, and enabling exceptional cycling stability exceeding 2000 h ...

Polarizing light microscopy for identifying chondroid tissue in aspirates of pleomorphic adenoma

open access: yes
Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common major and minor salivary gland tumor, involving mainly the parotid gland. Microscopically, PA presents a large spectrum of histologic features, with epithelial cells arranged in ductal structures, nests and ...

Graded‐Interface Dual‐Environment Hydrogel‐Polymer Electrolyte for Stabilized Anode and Sustained Cathode Kinetics in Aqueous Zinc‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A graded‐interface hydrogel‐polymer electrolyte decouples water activity to simultaneously stabilize the Zn anode and sustain cathode kinetics. The flexible design supports dendrite‐free cycling over 1600 h, high capacity in both MnO2 and V2O5 full cells, and stable pouch‐cell performance under bending, resolving the fundamental water conflict in ...

Resolving the Cu(bdc) Conundrum: Identifying Non‐Porous Packing of Prototypical Coordination‐Network Thin Films Combining Advanced Diffraction Techniques and Computational Modelling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solution‐processed Cu(bdc) forms prototypical MOF thin films for which a multitude of not fully satisfactory structural models have been suggested. Combining rotating grazing‐incidence diffraction and X‐ray reflectivity on two complementary samples with density‐functional theory, we first discard the previously suggested models and then identify a non ...

Polarizing Optical Microscopic Characterization of Nematic Liquid Crystal Confined in Porous Silicon

open access: yes, 2011
With polarizing optical microscopy we have investigated the electro-optic properties of a nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobipheny confined in the microchannels of porous silicon.

Tailoring Li‐ion Storage and Transport in Two‐Dimensional Conjugated Metal‐Organic Frameworks via Precise Nitrogen Incorporation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two nitrogen‐doped 2D conjugated metal‐organic frameworks (2D c‐MOFs, namely Cu‐Nx‐OHBA, x = 2 or 4) are synthesized, featuring precise nitrogen incorporation via rational ligand design. The Cu‐Nx‐OHBA 2D c‐MOFs are largely tailorable by varying skeletal nitrogen density, with respect to electrical conductivity, Li‐storage capacitance, and Li‐transport

Modern Microscopy on The Light Side: An Instrumental Approach to Small Particle Identification

open access: yes, 1992
Developments in space exploration, microelectronics, and other high-tech industries have promoted cleanroom technology and increased the need to identify particles sometimes too small to handle with the polarizing light microscope.

Invisible Polymer Walls Enhance Reorientational Optical Nonlinearity in Oligothiophene‐Doped Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The polymer wall stabilized dye‐doped liquid crystals (PWLCs) enhance the sensitivity of photoinduced molecular reorientation in dye‐doped LC systems. The PWLC with an invisible polymer wall successfully reduces the threshold intensity and functions as an optical limiter under the incidence of low intensity light laser source.
