Dynasties and the Political Budget Cycle [PDF]
In this paper, we provide a wide set of results which point toward a better understanding of the role of political dynasties in representative democracies. Our empirical analysis focuses on local politics in Italy, using a large sample of mayors and mayoral candidates in the period 1998-2012.

AbstractThis paper combines incumbency advantage and political budget cycle theory. An opportunistic politician is given two instruments: deficit‐financed transfers and propaganda. Unlike earlier analytical models, but in accordance with the empirical literature, government manipulations do actually improve re‐election chances.

Do political budget cycles really exist? [PDF]
Most recent cross-country studies on election-motivated fiscal policy assume that the data can be pooled. As various tests suggest that our data for some 70 democratic countries for the period 1970-2007 cannot be pooled, we use the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimator to test whether political budget cycles (PBCs) exist in our sample.
