Analysis of multiple‐herbicide resistant Amaranthus palmeri populations from Spain points to an introduction of the eccDNA from America

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
In this study, multiple herbicide resistant mechanisms have been confirmed in two Amaranthus palmeri populations from Spain that survived glyphosate‐ and ALS‐inhibitor herbicides. Our data suggest that the eccDNA and the mutations identified in the ALS gene are the result of an evolutionary event that occurred outside Spain.

Symbiotic bacteria participate in pectinolytic metabolism to enhance larval growth in Zeugodacus cucurbitae

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The larval food consumption, growth, and pectinase activity without symbiotic bacteria are suppressed in Zeugodacus cucurbitae. We isolated four strains of Klebsiella spp. that can participate in pectinolytic metabolism from feeding wounds. Reintroducing them to sterile eggs breaks the developmental constraints caused by the lack of symbiotic bacteria.

Dynamics of expenditure on insecticides in the management and control of corn leafhoppers (Dalbulus maidis)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The results reveal an increase in insecticide expenditures for controlling corn leafhoppers, highlighting the need for integrated pest management and sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate economic and environmental impacts. Abstract BACKGROUND The corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis) has caused significant losses to corn crops, mainly due to the ...

Immune priming of honey bees protects against a major microsporidian pathogen

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
We immune‐primed honey bees at two developmental stages in the laboratory and the field with heat‐killed Nosema ceranae spores. When subsequently fed live spores, immune‐primed adults had lower infection levels. Abstract BACKGROUND Honey bees face significant threats from pathogens like Nosema ceranae, a microsporidian parasite that contributes to ...

Insecticides outweigh rye cover crop in triggering secondary pest outbreaks

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Insecticides outweigh rye cover crop in triggering secondary pest outbreaks. Zeus Mateos‐Fierro*, Ashley Leach, Ian Kaplan. Spider mite and melon aphid outbreaks are enhanced with broad‐spectrum insecticides, while natural enemies are reduced. However, rye cover crop has little effect on either pest or natural enemy populations.
