POLLEN grains from many plants can be readily germinated on 30 percent solutions of cane sugar with 0.8 percent of gelatine. The rate of germination varies ; but in many Labiates it begins within fifteen minutes at room temperature, and growth is obvious under a 2/3 objective with a micrometer eyepiece.

Phytases of Germinating Lily Pollen

Phytic acid is a well known constituent of seeds, where it acts as a phosphorus and myo-inositol reserve (Loewus 1983). Phytate is stored in the protein body as the mixed salt of potassium and magnesium and lesser amounts of calcium, iron, and manganese. Upon germination phytate is degraded, supplying the seedling with these constituents.
