Acid rain and pollen germination in corn
Environmental Pollution, 1987The properties of an acid rain episode that could influence the germination of pollen in corn, Zea mays L., were evaluated by treating silks with a simulated acid rain and measuring the subsequent germination of pollen on the silks. The data indicated that acid rain creates an inhospitable environment for pollen germination on the silk surface. Reduced

Pollen Germination and Pollen Tube Growth in Vitro
1992Pollen germination and pollen tube growth are prerequisites for fertilization and seed development. Because of the involvement of the pistillate tissue in nature, physiologic and biochemical investigations on pollen germination and pollen tube growth in vivo are rather difficult. In vitro germination techniques have therefore been used extensively on a

The effect of temperature on olive pollen germination
Acta Horticulturae, 2019Temperature is an important factor controlling plant growth and development. The reproductive phase has proven to be one of the most temperature sensitive stages in plants. Pollen grains, once released from anthers, act as independent functional units and are exposed to the ambient environment.

Pollen Germination and Pollen-Tube Growth
1987Publisher Summary Pollen germination and pollen-tube growth events when viewed either in culture or in the style are considered as biochemically, physiologically, and structurally complex. The various processes involved are each independent in some measure, but still all are interactive—namely, the successful attainment of the delivery of two male ...

Pollen germination is impeded by tap water
Environmental Pollution, 1990Pollen germination in vitro is totally inhibited in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and other species if tap water is used to prepare the germination medium. This effect is already fully present if tap water accounts for only 25% of the medium. Furthermore, the pollen grains deteriorate rapidly and the culture medium turns yellowish-brown.

Effect of Antiseptics on the Germination of Pollen Grains
Nature, 1946POLLEN grains from many plants can be readily germinated on 30 percent solutions of cane sugar with 0.8 percent of gelatine. The rate of germination varies ; but in many Labiates it begins within fifteen minutes at room temperature, and growth is obvious under a 2/3 objective with a micrometer eyepiece.

1994
The ability to germinate fresh pollen on a “defined” medium offers opportunities for a number of areas of research. Applications, such as agrichemical assessment, gametophyte selection, etc., have been reported by a number of investigators over the last 25 years or more.

FINE‐STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN THE CYTOPLASM OF GERMINATING POLLEN
American Journal of Botany, 1965Quiescent and germinated pollen grains of Parkinsonia aculeata, Hymenocallis occidentalis, Hippeastrum belladonna, and Ranunculus macranthus were studied electron microscopically following KMnO4‐fixation, and comparisons between the 2 developmental stages were made.

GERMINAL APERTURAL FORMATION IN POLLEN
TAXON, 1975SummaryEvolutionary proposals involving pollen grain characters have treated germinal apertures as though they were formed by one universal process and hence derivable from a common type. A review of published data on apertural formation for pollen ofSilene, Tradescantia, andNelumboand original information forEpilobiumindicates that there are several ...
