ZmMS1 coordinates ROS homeostasis, lipid allocation, and male fertility for maize breeding applications

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
The redox‐sensitive transcriptional repressor ZmMS1 coordinates reactive oxygen species homeostasis and lipid allocation for pollen exine and anther cuticle formation. Loss or precocious expression of ZmMS1 causes male sterility. Constitutive overexpression induces dwarfism and semi‐sterility. These findings enable flexible maize male‐sterility systems

Watermelon genotype‐independent transformation via direct organogenesis from the cotyledon base

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Inducing adventitious buds from the base of watermelon cotyledon through direct organogenesis resulted in a watermelon genetic transformation system that overcomes regeneration barriers and genotype limitations.

Identification and functional analysis of class 3 lipases associated with triacylglycerol metabolism in Nannochloropsis oceanica (Eustigmatophyceae)

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Microalgae accumulate triacylglycerols (TAGs) as storage lipids in response to nutrient limitation, yet the mechanisms governing TAG turnover remain incompletely understood. In the oleaginous microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica, functional studies of TAG degradation have focused on lipases containing patatin domains, whereas the roles of other ...

Dodder seedlings benefit from apoplastic nutrition by inducing SWEET15‐mediated unloading of sucrose from the host's phloem

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Cuscuta reflexa infection sites. Summary Cuscuta species are holoparasitic plants that penetrate host stems with haustoria, connect to the vasculature and exhaust water, nutrients and carbohydrates. Parasite seedlings possess only limited maternal reserves and the development of a vascular connection takes several days.

TipQuant: a robust algorithm for quantitative analysis of spatiotemporally dynamic activities in tip‐growing cells

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Tip Quantification enables quantitative analyses over versatile selections of regions of interest. Summary Cell polarity and tip growth rely on the dynamic spatial organization of signaling and structural components. Quantitative characterization of these spatiotemporal dynamics is critical for understanding polarized cell growth, yet manual ...

The miR167–ARF8 module coordinates stamen–pistil development and fruit set in tomato

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
SlMIR167a is the functionally prominent SlMIR167 gene in tomato fruit development. Summary Auxin is an important regulator of reproductive development. The families of the AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR (ARF) genes, important components of the auxin signal, have expanded in flowering plants.

The combination of morphogenic regulators BABY BOOM and GRF‐GIF improves maize transformation efficiency and promotes leaf regeneration

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Maize regeneration via somatic embryogenesis by ectopic expression of morphogenic factors TaGRF4‐TaGIF1 and ZmBBM. Summary Transformation is an indispensable tool for plant genetics and functional genomics. Although stable transformation in maize is no longer a major obstacle, there remains a need for accessible and efficient methods for academic ...
