Recognition and rejection phenomena during pollen-pistil interaction

Proceedings / Indian Academy of Sciences, 1979
In flowering plants, the pollen grain—the male gametophyte—interacts with the diploid sporophytic tissue of the pistil before liberating the male gametes in the vicinity of the female gamete. During this gametophyte-sporophyte interaction the male gametes are effectively screened by the pistil ensuring the entry of only the appropriate pollen tubes ...

Pollen-Pistil Interaction and Control of Fertilization

1982
Fertilization in flowering plants is a unique phenomenon and involves two fusion processes — syngamy between one of the male gametes and egg, and triple fusion between the other male gamete and fusion nucleus. Successful fertilization leads to fruit and seed development. The processes leading to fertilization are initiated on the stigma.

Transcriptome dynamics in the Arabidopsis male germline during pollen–pistil interactions

The Plant Journal
SUMMARYWhen pollen lands on a receptive stigma, it germinates and extends a tube inside the transmitting tissue of the pistil to deliver the sperm cells for double fertilization. The growth of the pollen tube triggers significant alterations in its gene expression.
