A score for predicting risk of death from cardiovascular disease in adults with raised blood pressure, based on individual patient data from randomised controlled trials. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
OBJECTIVE: To create a risk score for death from cardiovascular disease that can be easily used. DESIGN: Data from eight randomised controlled trials of antihypertensive treatment. SETTING: Europe and North America.

Comparative analysis of cellular immune responses in treated Leishmania patients and hamsters against recombinant Th1 stimulatory proteins of Leishmania donovani

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
Our prior studies demonstrated that cellular response of T helper 1 (Th1) type was generated by a soluble antigenic fraction (ranging from 89.9–97.1 kDa) of Leishmania donovani promastigote, in treated Leishmania patients as well as hamsters and showed ...

A Millimeter‐Scale Implantable Magneto–Mechano–Electric Transducer Based on BTO Piezoelectric Ceramics for Remote Wireless Electrical Stimulation of Injured Sciatic Nerves

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We report a fully wireless, circuit‐free neural stimulator built on a millimetric magneto‐mechano‐electric (MME) cantilever transducer (3 × 10 × 5 mm) with a barium titanate (BTO) piezoelectric ceramic core. Under low‐frequency alternating magnetic fields, the MME cantilever mechanically oscillates, inducing stress on the BTO element and thereby ...

Antibodies inhibit transmission and aggregation of C9orf72 poly-GA dipeptide repeat proteins.

open access: yes, 2017
Cell-to-cell transmission of protein aggregates is an emerging theme in neurodegenerative disease. Here, we analyze the dipeptide repeat (DPR) proteins that form neuronal inclusions in patients with hexanucleotide repeat expansion C9orf72, the most ...

Poly-basic peptides and polymers as new drug candidates against Plasmodium falciparum

open access: yesMalaria Journal
Background Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria-causing parasite, is a leading cause of infection-induced deaths worldwide. The preferred treatment approach is artemisinin-based combination therapy, which couples fast-acting artemisinin derivatives with ...

Hair Follicle Seedling Cryomicroneedles from Hierarchical Microfluidic Organoid on a Chip

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this paper, a hierarchical microfluidic chip is developed to produce uniform hair follicle organoids (HFOs) in cryomicroneedles. Cryopreservation agents encapsulate HFOs, preserving viability and hair growth potential. The cryomicroneedles enable simple intradermal transplantation with good skin penetration.

Single‐Cell Reveal GALNT7‐Dependent Ferroptosis Suppression as a Mechanism of Immunotherapy Resistance in Non‐Small Cell Lung Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Integrated clinical and mechanistic analyses identify GALNT7 as a ferroptosis‐suppressive regulator associated with immunotherapy resistance in non‐small cell lung cancer. GALNT7 depletion promotes lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and ferroptosis, enhances CD8+ T‐cell activation and IFN‐γ production, and sensitizes tumors to PD‐1 blockade,

Cytosine methylation of tRNA-Asp by DNMT2 has a role in translation of proteins containing poly-Asp sequences

open access: yes, 2015
The Dnmt2 RNA methyltransferase catalyses the methylation of C38 in the anticodon loop of tRNA-Asp, but the molecular role of this methylation is unknown.

Eye‐Brain Neuroimmune Axis Enables Long‐Term Survival in Glioblastoma by Modulating Brain Immune Surveillance and Neuronal Excitability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The eye–brain neuroimmune axis triggers immune activation and disrupts pathological neuronal connectivity to extend glioblastoma survival. ABSTRACT As an anatomical extension of the central nervous system (CNS), the eye harbors rich neural and immune interfaces with the brain. However, the integrated immunological and neurological nexus between the eye
