Taxonomic Distribution of Tetrodotoxin in Acotylean Flatworms (Polycladida: Platyhelminthes)
Marine Biotechnology, 2020Tetrodotoxin (TTX), also known as pufferfish toxin, causes a respiratory disorder by blocking neurotransmission, with voltage-gated sodium channel inhibition on muscle and nerve tissues. The toxin is widely distributed across vertebrates, invertebrates and bacteria. Therefore, it is generally thought that TTX in pufferfish accumulates via the food webs,

A molecular framework for the phylogeny of the Pseudocerotidae (Platyhelminthes, Polycladida)
Hydrobiologia, 2001Systematic relationships within the cotylean family Pseudocerotidae were examined using nucleotide sequences of the D3 expansion segment of the 28S rDNA gene. A previously suggested separation of Pseudoceros and Pseudobiceros based on the number of male reproductive systems was confirmed.

AbstractBased on light and electron microscopy observations, oogenesis in the cotylean polyclad Prosthiostomum siphunculus was investigated for the first time. The numerous ovarian follicles are dispersed essentially in the dorsal parenchyma. In the follicles, a ventral germinative zone with undifferentiated germs cells of different sizes and a dorsal ...

Fine structure of the eyes of Pseudoceros canadensis (Turbellaria, Polycladida)
Zoomorphology, 1981The cerebral and epidermal ocelli of the Muller's larva and the cerebral and tentacular eyes of the adult turbellarian Pseudoceros canadensis were studied by electron microscopy. The right cerebral ocellus of the larva consists of one cup-shaped pigmented cell and three sensory cells that bear microvilli.

Some New Zealand Polyclads (Platyhelminthes, Polycladida)
Zootaxa, 2007Eight species of poyclads from New Zealand are presented. Five species were already known to science, and are redescribed. Four of these species have been previously reported from New Zealand, the fifth, Echinoplana celerrima, is new to New Zealand. Two are new species of the genus Chromoplana, Chromoplana sirena n. sp. and Chromoplana kaikouris n. sp.

At last a fixation method that ensures tropical pseudocerotid polyclads are fixed flat, preserved for histological preparation and which also retains their colour pattern has been developed. FCA-PGPP (Formaldehyde Calcium Acetate-Propylene Glycol, Propylene Phenoxetol) fixative is frozen and worms are coaxed onto filter paper which is then laid on the ...

Biodiversity of marine flatworms (Polycladida, Platyhelminthes) in southeastern Australia
2021Polycladida is an order of free-living invertebrates of the Phylum Platyhelminthes, commonly referred to as flatworms. The functional roles of polyclad flatworms in ecological communities are anticipated to be complex and variable but our understanding of such processes is currently hampered by a lack of information on fundamental knowledge, such as ...

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a pufferfish toxin, is a highly potent neurotoxin that has been found in a wide variety of animals. The TTX-bearing flatworm Planocera multitentaculata possesses a large amount of TTX and is considered responsible for the toxification of TTX-bearing animals such as pufferfish (Takifugu and Chelonodon) and the toxic goby Yongeichthys

Warning colouration in pseudocerotid flatworms (Platyhelminthes, Polycladida). A preliminary study
Hydrobiologia, 1998Many species of tropical and subtropical pseudocerotid flatworms are noted for their brilliant colour patterns and conspicuous behaviour and are suitable candidates for the investigation of aposematic colouration. This study gives the first experimental evidence of aposematic colouration in pseudocerotid flatworms.

Stylochus mediterraneus (Turbellaria: Polycladida), predator on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis
Marine Biology, 1980The polyclad Stylochus mediterraneus Galleni has been found associated with the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk., on which it feeds. Polyclads allowed to feed freely on groups of mussels of different sizes preyed mainly on small mussels
