Chemotherapy in Polycythemia Vera
Acta geneticae medicae et gemellologiae, 1968Summary210 cases of polycythemia vera were observed over a period of 15 years. The majority of them received P32; treatment with Myleran instead of with radioactive phosphorus was instituted only recently. To a small number of patients chemotherapy was given alternately with P32.

THE course of polycythemia vera is complicated by hemorrhagic and thromboembolic phenomena of varying severity occurring in about a third of the cases. These complications have been ascribed to the hypervolemia and increased red-cell mass, with resultant sluggish blood flow, capillary distention with poor retractability, thrombocytosis and a complex ...

Although no cure exists for PV, treatment can prolong lives and enhance the quality-of-life for patients affected by this condition (Talarico, 1998). The insidious onset may make diagnosis difficult, but PV should be suspected when any patient presents with an elevated hematocrit.

The treatment of polycythemia vera
Journal of Chronic Diseases, 1957p” LYCYTHEMIA vera is a chronic disease of unknown etiology, the chief clinical manifestations of which are headaches, fatigability, dizziness, pruritus, splenomegaly, plethora, cyanosis, and systolic hypertension. Elevations of the erythrocyte level, the hemoglobin concentration, and the hematocrit value constitute the most consistent laboratory ...

Polycythemia vera (PV) is one of the myeloproliferative diseases, and, as such, is an example of clonal hematopoiesis. The progeny of a single, abnormal, hematopoietic stem cell gain a growth advantage over their normal counterparts resulting in overproduction of red cells generally accompanied by overproduction of granulocytes and platelets as well ...

POLYCYTHEMIA VERA AND GLOMERULONEPHRITIS
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1983Abstract: Six patients with polycythemia vera and proteinuria are described. Three patients had histologically defined glomerulonephritis. It is proposed that there is an association between polycythemia vera and the development of glomerulonephritis. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed.

SUMMARY Clinical, laboratory, and pathologic findings in a case of polycythemia vera in a cat were recorded. Hematologic findings indicated marked polycythemia in the absence of a secondary cause. The red cell mass as measured directly by the 51Cr technique was markedly increased, whereas the plasma volume was normal.

Apoptosis and polycythemia vera
Current Opinion in Hematology, 1999Polycythemia vera is an acquired clonal myeloproliferative disorder characterized by increased numbers of erythroid cells, often with a concomitant rise in neutrophils and/or megakaryocytes. Normally, erythropoietin is essential for the survival and proliferation of erythroid progenitors; however in polycythemia vera the erythroid progenitor cells can ...
