Polydipsia is a condition whereby individuals consume excessive amounts of liquids, which is common in patients with schizophrenia. A 17-item Polydipsia Screening Tool (PST; Copyright 2000 by Sheila Reynolds) was evaluated for psychometric properties. Five nurses and 70 psychiatric residents in a 92-bed nursing home comprised the samples.

Clozapine Treatment of Polydipsia
Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, 1994A patient with refractory chronic schizophrenia having severe polydipsia and hyponatremia was treated with clozapine. There followed a dramatic improvement in the polydipsia and correction of the hyponatremia. This improvement has been sustained throughout a 6-month follow-up.

Primary polydipsia in thyrotoxicosis
Metabolism, 1972Abstract Five subjects presenting with thyrotoxicosis and complaining of thirst and polyuria have been investigated and the results compared with a group of thyrotoxic subjects with a normal fluid intake and output. Investigation failed to reveal any cause of an osmotic polyuria, and no defect in renal concentrating power was apparent.

Verapamil-induced ?primary? polydipsia
Pediatric Cardiology, 1995An 11-month-old male infant with recurrent supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) was treated with oral verapamil. Shortly thereafter he developed marked changes in behavior including lethargy, intensely increased thirst and urination, and irritability when denied fluids.

A 24 year old patient with epigastric pain, polyuria, polydipsia and hypercalcemia was admitted to the hospital. Besides the frequent causes of hypercalcemia such as primary hyperparathyroidism and malignancy-related hypercalcemia we had to consider sarcoidosis because of massive splenomegaly.
