Treatment of Primary Pulmonary Aspergillosis: An Assessment of the Evidence. [PDF]
Aspergillus spp. are a group of filamentous molds that were first described due to a perceived similarity to an aspergillum, or liturgical device used to sprinkle holy water, when viewed under a microscope.

Genealogy of Conjugated Acyclic Polyenes
Based on the total π-electron energies Eπs of Hückel Molecular Orbital (HMO) method for all the possible isomers of conjugated acyclic polyenes (C2nH2n+2) up to n = 7, the structure–stability relation of the possible isomers was analyzed.

Antifungal tolerance can promote the emergence of resistance yet often incurs fitness costs for fungal pathogens. How tolerant populations compensate for these deficits and how they may be therapeutically targeted remain poorly understood.

Structures and Bonding in Hexacarbonyl Diiron Polyenes: Cycloheptatriene and 1,3,5-Cyclooctatriene
Structural preferences of (1,3,5-cyclooctatriene) hexacarbonyl diiron [(C8H10)Fe2(CO)6] and cycloheptatriene hexacarbonyl diiron [(C7H8)Fe2(CO)6] were explored using density functional theory (DFT) computations.

Polyene antifungal amphotericin B (AmB) has been used for over 60 years, and remains a valuable clinical treatment for systemic mycoses, due to its broad antifungal activity and low rate of emerging resistance.

Electron correlation effects and two-photon absorption in diamond shaped graphene quantum dots
In quasi-1D $\pi$-conjugated polymers such as \emph{trans}-polyacetylene and polyenes, electron correlation effects determine the "reversed" excited state ordering in which the lowest two-photon $2A_{g}$ state lies below the lowest one-photon $1B_{u ...

The density matrix renormalization group for ab initio quantum chemistry [PDF]
During the past 15 years, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has become increasingly important for ab initio quantum chemistry. Its underlying wavefunction ansatz, the matrix product state (MPS), is a low-rank decomposition of the full ...

Polyenes are important for vision in all sighted species. The visual pigments (the rhodopsins) all use 11-cis-retinal as the chromophore; some possible reasons for the importance of this isomer are now emerging. New results on the involvement of xanthophils in the maintenance of the retina are also discussed.

Additivity of Heats of Combustion, LCAO Resonance Energies, and Bond Orders of Conformal Sets of Conjugated Compounds [PDF]
The notion of "conformal sets" of aromatic and other conjugated compounds is introduced. To a good approximation, it is found that the sum of the heats of combustion of the compounds in one set equals the sum for the compounds in the other set.
