Synthesis and accumulation of polygodial by tissue cultures of Polygonum hydropiper
Phytochemistry, 1989Abstract Callus and suspension cultures of Polygonum hydropiper accumulated the insect anti-feedant compound polygodial (and to a lesser extent its parent drimenol at levels of up to 0.25 and 29% of those in the flowering heads and foliage respectively.

Reaction of polygodial with primary amines: an alternative explanation to the antifeedant activity.
1982Spectroscopic study of the reactivity of isomeric polygodials I [R = β-CHO (II), α-CHO] with thiols and amines under biomimetic conditions showed that the antifeedant activity of II is due to its ability to form adducts with NH2 groups rather than with SH groups as previously reported (Kubo, I.; et al., 1976). II with MeNH2 gave the pyrrole III.
