Crystallization behavior of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) belongs to the family of polyhydroxyalkanoates and is both, biobased and biodegradable. Due to its linear chain structure, PHB is highly crystalline and has a melting temperature close to its decomposition temperature. Pure PHB crystallizes very slowly, so that the use for some technical applications is not commercially viable.

Novel electrospun materials for bone tissue engineering were obtained by blending biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) or polyhydroxybutyrate valerate (PHBV) with the anionic sulfated polysaccharide κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) in varying ratios. In both systems, the two components phase separated as shown by FTIR, DSC and TGA.

It is in process installed, that to growth of polarity of dissolvent there is a perfection of a crystal structure and decrease of a share of amorphous phase polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). It is shown, that a share of a defective crystal phase in films PHB directly proportional to magnitude of cohesive energy of dissolvent.
