Analysis of mutational effects of a polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) polymerase on bacterial PHB accumulation using an in vivo assay system [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2001
Polymerase is a central enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a well-known bacterial biodegradable polyester. In this study, we have established an in vivo assay system to analyze mutational effects of Ralstonia eutropha polymerase (termed PhbC(Re)) on the level of PHB accumulation in recombinant strains of Escherichia coli.

Accumulation of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) Helps Bacterial Cells to Survive Freezing.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Accumulation of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) seems to be a common metabolic strategy adopted by many bacteria to cope with cold environments. This work aimed at evaluating and understanding the cryoprotective effect of PHB.

Plasma Functionalized Scaffolds of Polyhydroxybutyrate Electrospun Fibers for Pancreatic Beta Cell Cultures

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2021
Fibrous scaffolds based on biodegradable and biocompatible polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) were produced by electrospinning. The scaffolds were coated by a thin solid film of polypyrrole, PPyI, deposited by plasma polymerization technique.

Technobiological Pathways for High‐CO₂ Capture Using Micro‐/Macroalgae: Genetic Engineering, Process Automation, and Value‐Added Bioproducts

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 21, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have emerged as one of the most critical drivers of climate change; this is primarily due to high concentrations and long atmospheric life of carbon dioxide (CO2). For a significant amount of time, various biological processes such as microalgal cultivation, cyanobacterial systems, photosynthetic microorganisms ...

Polyhydroxyalkanoates as Sustainable Agricultural Plastics: Processing Strategies, Performance, and Environmental Perspectives

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 5, May 2026.
This review highlights polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as biodegradable materials for agricultural plastics. It outlines how composition, processing, and formulation strategies shape material properties and end‐of‐life behavior. Applications in films and foams are discussed alongside current limitations in cost and scalability, emphasizing emerging ...

Robust Bioconjugated Antigens Induce Immune Responses Preventing Malaria Infection and its Transmission

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 28, 18 May 2026.
Engineered malaria antigens enable in vivo bioconjugation to submicron biopolymer particles in E. coli. Two antigens are co‐tethered at high density and defined stoichiometry. The resulting thermostable particles elicit strong, durable antibody and T‐cell responses, conferring robust protection and blocking mosquito transmission.

Manipulation of Polyhydroxybutyrate Properties through Blending with Ethyl-Cellulose for a Composite Biomaterial

open access: yesInternational Journal of Polymer Science, 2011
Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is widely used as a biomaterial in medical and tissue-engineering applications, a relatively high crystallinity limits its application. Blending PHB with ethyl-cellulose (EtC) was readily achieved to reduce PHB crystallinity and

Rewiring Escherichia coli central carbon metabolism for the sustainable bioconversion of waste glycerol into biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate [PDF]

open access: yesBiofuel Research Journal
The biomaterial polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a promising, renewable, and green alternative polymer. In this study, a method to incorporate gluconate 6-phosphate dehydratase (edd) deletion in Escherichia coli expressing PHB biosynthesis genes from ...
