Source misalignment in multimode polymer tapered waveguides for optical backplanes

open access: yes, 2007
Polymer tapered multimode waveguides were modeled using the finite difference wide-angle beam propagation method to investigate whether tapered input waveguide couplers decreasing in width away from the waveguide entrance give improved tolerance to ...

Spatially-resolved volume monitoring of adhesive cure using correlated-image optical coherence tomography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cross-correlation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images has been applied to internal imaging of PVA and two-part epoxy adhesives during cure, providing information on relative viscosity at different positions within the sample volume.

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.

Efficient fiber Bragg grating and fiber Fabry-Pe'rot sensor multiplexing scheme using a broadband pulsed mode-locked laser

open access: yes, 2005
A pulsed broadband mode-locked laser (MLL) combined with interferometric interrogation is shown to yield an efficient means of multiplexing a large number of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) or fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) strain sensors with high performance ...

Light‐Actuated Fiber‐Climbing Inchworm Robot Toward Endoluminal Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A kirigami‐inspired soft inchworm robot harnesses optical energy from a customized side‐emitting optical fiber, guaranteeing its propulsion along the fiber body. The wavelength‐selective responsiveness of dye‐functionalized liquid crystal elastomers and the application of temporal illumination patterns enable sequential control of robot components. The
