Abstract Ultrastructural studies were carried out on the surface of Vallisia indica , found on the gills of Scomberoides commersonianus in the Indian ocean. Tegumental serrations present on the hump and on the dorsal and ventro-lateral surfaces of the hindbody lie in the same plane as the secondary gill lamellae and may provide anchorage against ...

The middle region of the spermatozoon of Hexostoma exhibits two 9 + "1" axonemes, the nucleus, the mitochondrion, and cortical longitudinal microtubules. The ultrastructure is similar to that of other Polyopisthocotylean monogeneans and this confirms the position of the family Hexostomatidae within Polyopisthocotyleans.

Electron microscope observations have been made of the cecal epithelium of the sanguinivorous gill fluke Diclidophora merlangi (Monogenea: Polyopisthocotylea). The epithelium comprises two distinct cell types: pigmented hematin cells and flat, often branched, and extensive, connecting cells. The two types of cell are arranged alternately along the ceca

Sharpsnout bream (Diplodus puntazzo) has been used in Adriatic aquaculture for less than a decade, but the decreasing trend of rearing this species will probably result in its complete substitution by more exploited sea bream (Sparus aurata). Only two facilities still rear both fish species in neighbouring cages in monoculture.

Transmission electron microscope studies of the tegument of the tropical marine fish monogenean parasite Pseudothoracocotyla indica describe surface specialisations and detail the ultrastructure of the tegument and the haptor. The tegument consists of a syncytium, numerous electron-dense granules, electron-lucent vesicles and large multivesicular ...

Diplozoon is known to display an exceptional biology of reproduction: the hermaphroditic adults are permanently fused together and their genital ducts communicate. In contrast to all other polyopisthocotylean monogeneans in which the spermatozoa show an homogeneous biflagellate structure, the spermatozoon of Diplozoon is aflagellate.

Scanning and transmission electron microscopic studies have been made of the surface architecture of the fish-gill parasite, Allodiscocotyla diacanthi. Observations of the haptor region have revealed the presence of cushion-like supports at the base of each clamp, together with a pair of anchor-hooks.

This report describes the morphology and points out the originality of the osmoregulatory system of the oncomiracidium ofSerranicotyle labracis (Van Beneden and Hesse 1863) Maillard, Euzet and Silan, 1988 (Microcotylidae) among Polyopisthocotylea (Monogenea).

The ultrastructure of the pharynx of Zeuxapta seriolae and Paramicrocotyloides reticularis (Monogenea : Microcotylidae) is described. The pharynx of both species is surrounded by a thick sheath resembling a basal lamina. It contains layers of longitudinal, circular and radial muscles, glandular cells, smaller cells interpreted as connective tissue ...
