Sphenochoanal polyps

Nasal polyps are a common aetiology for persistent nasal obstruction. While antrochoanal polyps predominate the literature, the lesser known sphenochoanal polyp is equally as bothersome. To our knowledge, no prior dedicated review exists that characterises the patient population affected by this disease.

Antrochoanal polyps

The antrochoanal polyp, a benign solitary polypoid lesion, usually arises in a maxillary sinus, opacifying and enlarging the sinus cavity without bone destruction. It passes through the ostium of the sinus into the choana, and from there into the posterior nasopharynx.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFPs) are rare mesenchymal lesions in which histologically spindle cells proliferate in the submucosal layer [1, 2]. Despite occurrence of IFPs throughout the gastrointestinal tract, they are most commonly found in the gastric antrum (66–75%) [3].

Carcinoma of the large bowel arises almost exclusively in neoplastic polyps, which are present in 5-10% of the population over age 40. These polyps may be of three histologic types: (a) tubular adenoma (adenomatous polyp), (b) tubulovillous adenoma (villoglandular polyp), and (c) villous adenoma.

Abstract: We report three patients, ages 5 years 3 years. and 4 days, with umbilical polyps. In the third child the polyp was associated with an umbilical enteric fistula. An umbilical polyp is the result of incomplet closure of the omphalomesenteric duct and becomes apparent after the umbilical cord is detached.
