An efficient and effective RNA extraction protocol for ferns. [PDF]

open access: yesAppl Plant Sci
Abstract Premise The extraction of high‐quality RNA is the critical first step for the analysis of gene expression and gene space. This remains particularly challenging in plants, and especially in ferns, where the disruption of the cell wall and separation of organic compounds from nucleic acids is not trivial.

Is There a Key Primer for Amplification of Core Land Plant DNA Barcode Regions (rbcL and matK)? [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We use in silico PCR to select and measure the amplification capability of primer. We tested 366 and 489 published primers for the rbcL and matK regions, respectively, using sequences from 8463 different land plant species. Our results indicate a set of primers that effectively cover all land plant sequences, particularly for the rbcL region.

Allocation of Resources to Growth and Spore Production in a Fern Ophioglossum vulgatum L.: Effects of Mowing and Simulated Herbivory. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
The study explores how the rare fern Ophioglossum vulgatum allocates resources between growth and reproduction under mowing and simulated herbivory. The results reveal that mowing promotes photosynthetic growth at the expense of spore production, while herbivory shows no significant impact, highlighting the fern's resilience. The findings underline the

Global Diversification Rates of Ferns Across Spatial and Climatic Gradients. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
Diversification rates of fern genera across the phylogeny. Abstract Geographic patterns of diversity in any group of plants are the result of the interplay of environmental conditions and the evolutionary dynamics of the respective plant group. Here, the geographic distribution of current mean diversification rates (MDR) is explored at the genus level ...

Character evolution of modern eupolypods supports the assignment of the fossil fern Cretacifilix fungiformis to Dryopteridaceae

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
The fossil fern species Cretacifilix fungiformis from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber from Myanmar was previously assigned to eupolypod ferns for having sporangia with a vertical annulus and sporangial stalks 2–3 cells thick, along with monolete spores with ...
