Synthetic studies toward the preparation of several polypyrrolic macrocycles are described. The majority of the research was directed toward the synthesis of a pentapyrrolic analogue (15) of porphyrin (13). The results were surprising, as a meso-substituted porphyrin (63) was the result.

Phase evolution induced by polypyrrole in iron oxide–polypyrrole nanocomposite
Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, 2005Abstract Nanocomposite of polypyrrole and iron oxide were prepared using simultaneous gelation and polymerization processes. Varied amounts of pyrrole were added to a solution containing an Fe(III) salt as precursor and 2-metoxy ethanol as solvent. The particles were found to be nanocrystalline.

Abstract This chapter presents the history of polypyrrole over the period of 1915–1983. As this material is dependent on the availability of pyrrole, the chapter begins with an overview of the discovery and synthesis of this heterocycle before introducing its initial oxidative polymerization by Angeli in 1915.

This chapter gives on overview of the syntheses of polypyrroles published in the literature since the discovery of this polymer. The work has been organized into two sections emphasizing, respectively, the electrochemical and chemical routes. In addition, similarities between the two approaches have been underlined when existing.
