Structure analysis of biologically important prokaryotic glycopolymers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Of the many post-translational modifications organisms can undertake, glycosylation is the most prevalent and the most diverse. The research in this thesis focuses on the structural characterisation of glycosylation in two classes of glycopolymer (

Protein O‐glycosylation in the Bacteroidota phylum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Species of the Bacteroidota phylum exhibit a unique O‐glycosylation system. It modifies noncytoplasmic proteins on a specific amino acid motif with a shared glycan core but a species‐specific outer glycan. A locus of multiple glycosyltransferases responsible for the synthesis of the outer glycan has been identified.

Polysaccharide/Surfactant complexes at the air-water interface - Effect of the charge density on interfacial and foaming behaviors [PDF]

open access: yesLangmuir 24, 22 (2009) 12849-12857, 2010
The binding of a cationic surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) to a negatively charged natural polysaccharide (pectin) at air-solution interfaces, was investigated on single interfaces and in foams, versus the linear charge densities of the polysaccharide.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties of Injectable Chitosan–Guar Gum Hydrogel Reinforced with Bacterial Cellulose Nanofibers for Tissue Engineering Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents the development and characterization of injectable nanocomposite hydrogels based on N‐succinyl chitosan, oxidized guar gum, and bacterial cellulose nanofibers. Emphasizing enhanced mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the hydrogels exhibit fast gelation, improved structural integrity, and reduced swelling. Their potential for

Biofilm Control by Active Topography with Mucin Coating

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a new antifouling strategy based on a bioinspired design. Mucin coating enhances biofilm control by active topography with beating micron‐sized pillars. Besides the mechanical force of beating pillars, the antibiofilm activities also involve biological factors since mucin coating inhibits swarming motility and c‐di‐GMP synthesis in ...

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin) of Proteus bacteria-chemical structure, serological specificity and the role in pathogenicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of Gram-negative bacteria are composed of three regions: О-specific chain (OPS), the core oligosaccharide and lipid A. All three regions of Proteus LPS were studied. The differences in the structure of OPS serve as the basis

Dietary Supplementation with Soluble Plantain Non-Starch Polysaccharides Inhibits Intestinal Invasion of Salmonella Typhimurium in the Chicken [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Soluble fibres (non-starch polysaccharides, NSP) from edible plants but particularly plantain banana (Musa spp.), have been shown in vitro and ex vivo to prevent various enteric pathogens from adhering to, or translocating across, the human intestinal ...
