The preconcentration of mercury and methylmercury on dithizone-coated polystyrene beads

Talanta, 1979
The preconcentration of "inorganic" and methyl mercury cations from aqueous solution is described. The procedure involves collection of mercury on dithizone-coated macroreticular resin beads prior to analysis by cold-vapour atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Filler–matrix debonding in glass bead-filled polystyrene

Journal of Materials Science, 1997
The debonding process in a glassy polymer filled with glass beads during constant strain rate tensile loading has been analysed both theoretically and experimentally. A model which combines concepts of damage mechanics and the time dependence of interfacial strength has been proposed and compared with experimental results on glass bead-filled ...

Preparation of Au coated polystyrene beads and their application in an immunoassay

Journal of Immunological Methods, 2006
A novel immunoassay method based on polystyrene beads coated with Au nanoparticles (Au@PS) is described. Au nanoparticles were prepared by reductive reaction, and then deposited on the surface of polystyrene beads to form Au coatings. Results indicated that the Au coatings had good stability and that human IgG was immobilized at a concentration of 16 ...

Model‐filled polymers. II. Stability of polystyrene beads in a polystyrene matrix

Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics, 1990
AbstractThermomechanical degradation, as a result of mixing at 175°C during the preparation of polystyrene composites containing monodisperse (0.45μm) crosslinked polystyrene beads, often leads to a uniform decrease in rheological properties on increasing the concentration or on reducing the crosslink density of the beads.

Comments on the generation of polystyrene bead aerosols

Journal of Aerosol Science, 1971
Abstract An aerosol generator is described which produces mondisperse polystyrene bead aerosols. The flow of the hydrosol into the atomiser is restricted by means of a thin stainless steel capillary; the spray droplets are thus very small and monodispersity is improved.

Macrocycle-functionalized polystyrene beads as specific absorbers

Reactive and Functional Polymers, 2015
Abstract Crosslinked polystyrene beads were first functionalized with phenacyl ester linkers, and a series of four macrocycles with different ring sizes were synthesized from these linkers. The macrocycles were built from amide-linked monomers coupled by conventional peptide-synthesis methods.

Swelling of cross-linked polystyrene beads in toluene

Microelectronic Engineering, 2008
Ultraviolet light irradiation of PS microbeads can be used for controlling the solvent uptake and release upon exposure to its vapor. The irradiation leads to additional fracture and crosslinking of PS chains thus reducing the amount of solvent uptake significantly.

Impacts of Hemispherical Strikers on Polystyrene Bead Foam

Journal of Cellular Plastics, 1999
Polystyrene bead foam mouldings were impacted with a hemispherical striker of radius equal to the moulding thickness. Localised densification was observed below the contact area. A number of annular cracks initiated at bead boundaries at the moulding surface; the inner one grew most and limited load spreading.

Dynamic shear modulus of polystyrene bead foams

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1972
AbstractThe shear storage modulus has been determined for 0.05, 0.10, and 0.22 g/cc polystyrene bead foams and for the full density polymer at frequencies from 0.005 to 0.5 Hz at temperatures from −5° to 84°C. These data are superposed to form master curves of log modulus versus log temperature‐reduced frequency, using shift factors calculated by the ...

Polystyrene-bead concrete properties and mix design

International Journal of Cement Composites and Lightweight Concrete, 1982
Abstract Polystyrene-bead concrete is used to form the cores of concrete sandwich beams and slabs in current research in the University of Durham. The paper describes the properties of the material and suggests a method of mix design.
