Detergent removal by non-polar polystyrene beads

European Biophysics Journal, 1998
Detergent removal from lipid-protein-detergent micellar solutions is the most successful strategy for reconstitution of integral membrane proteins into proteoliposomes or into two-dimensional crystals. This review establishes the potential of polystyrene beads as a simple alternative to other conventional detergent removing strategies such as dialysis,

Determination of the occluded calcium hydroxyapatite in polystyrene beads

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1959
To determine the concentration of calcium hydroxyapatite occluded in polystyrene beads, styrene was polymerized in aqueous dispersion in the presence of calcium hydroxyapatite labeled with P32. It was found that the large beads contain a larger concentration of occluded apatite than the smaller ones.

Functional Characteristics of the Spasm Model by the Polystyrene Latex Bead

2001
Many different and innovative approaches to prevention and treatment of cerebral vasospasm have been made, most of them promising in the laboratory but unsuccessful in clinical usage. This has been due in part to a lack of understanding of the pathogenesis of vasospasm.

Self‐extinguishing polystyrene foaming‐in‐place beads

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1964
AbstractThe preparation of practical self‐extinguishing polystyrene foaming‐in‐place compositions by suspension polymerization is described. The halogen necessary for self‐extinguishing characteristics is incorporated by chain transfer. The synergistic effect of organic peroxides decreases drastically the amount of halogen necessary.

The determination of a constitutive equation for polystyrene bead foam.

2009
Polystyrene Bead (PSB) foam is often used as an energy dissipator to reduce the likelihood of serious injury to motor vehicle passengers during accidents. The purpose of this study was to investigate and model the behaviour of PSB foam subjected to quasi-static and dynamic deformation. A wide range of tests was conducted.

Floating Polystyrene Beads as Insulation for Cryogenic Fluids

1961
This paper presents a quantitative description of a floating insulation for the surfaces of cryogenic fluids stored in open-topped dewar flasks. The technique makes use of polystyrene beads, which provide good thermal insulation, conform to a complex surface geometry—such as partially immersed equipment—and act as a good electrical insulator as well ...

Platelet retention by albuminated glass and polystyrene beads.

Journal of bioengineering, 1978
Ex vivo platelet retention by albuminated glass and polystyrene beads has been evaluated as a function of flow rate, bead surface area, blood exposure time and albumin treatment. The stability of the albumin coatings as well as scanning electron microscopy of the various surfaces before and after blood exposure has also been included.
