Earthworms and Plant Residues Modify Nematodes in Tropical Cropping Soils (Madagascar): A Mesocosm Experiment

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Soil Science, 2010
Free-living nematodes present several characteristics that have led to their use as bioindicators of soil quality. Analyzing the structure of nematofauna is a pertinent way to understand soil biological processes.

Pengaruh kadar air tanah terhadap biomassa cacing tanah Pontoscolex corethrurus

open access: yesJournal of Biological Researches, 1995
This research was done in order to study of effect the soil humidity on earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus biomass. 80 earthworm were placed in plastic pot (12.5 cm in diameter an 10 cm on deep) contained soil media (four individuals in each pot).

Influência da minhoca Pontoscolex corethrurus na distribuição do acaricida dicofol em um Argissolo Effects of earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus on distribution of acaricida dicofol in a Podzolic soil

Devastating Rio Doce mining disaster sends shockwaves through earthworm populations. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Environ Qual
Abstract The Fundão dam breach is considered one of the most severe environmental mining disasters globally, causing widespread changes to the soils of the Rio Doce watershed, one of Brazil's most important catchments. Given the ecological importance of earthworms to soil structure and dynamics, we investigated the richness, abundance, and biomass of ...

Phylogeography of a riparian earthworm shows environmental factors influence genetic structure

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 50, Issue 1, Page 156-168, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim The study of cosmopolitan earthworms could be even more interesting than that of endemic species in revealing evolutionary processes. Previous research on the cosmopolitan worm Eiseniella tetraedra has indicated some phylogeographic structure among populations, but the factors responsible remain unresolved.

Land use conversion to agriculture impacts biodiversity, erosion control, and key soil properties in an Andean watershed

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2022., 2022
Abstract The conversion of natural vegetation to agricultural land uses in mountainous Andean landscapes threatens an array of key ecological processes and ecosystem services (ES). In protected areas and buffer regions that provide water to cities, it is critical to understand how interactions between plants and soil communities sustain a range of ...

Invasive earthworms erode soil biodiversity: A meta-analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anim Ecol, 2018
Invasion ecology of below‐ground ecosystem engineers is still less known. Here, the authors quantitatively synthesize the impacts of a below‐ground ecosystem engineer (earthworms) on soil biodiversity. The results show that soil animal diversity and density substantially decrease in response to invasive earthworms.

Unraveling the dietary diversity of Neotropical top predators using scat DNA metabarcoding: A case study on the elusive Giant Otter

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 3, Issue 5, Page 889-900, September 2021., 2021
A multi‐marker scat DNA metabarcoding approach was used to examine the dietary diversity of the world's largest and rarest otter, the iconic giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) from fecal DNA. The combined use of highly discriminant markers (COI and 12S) and of local reference databases of DNA barcodes offered a high accuracy of taxonomic assignments ...
