Nonlinear model-based control of a semi-industrial batch crystallizer using a population balance modeling framework

open access: yes, 2012
This paper presents an output feedback nonlinear model-based control approach for optimal operation of industrial batch crystallizers. A full population balance model is utilized as the cornerstone of the control approach.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Control of Nanoparticle Growth in High Temperature Reactor: Application of Reduced Population Balance Model II [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Aerosol processes are often model using the population balance equation (PBE). This article presents a study on the simulation of particle size distribution during nanoparticle growth with simultaneous chemical reaction, nucleation, condensation and ...

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Balance Impairment in the Burn Population: A Burn Model System National Database Study

open access: yesEuropean Burn Journal
Balance is an important component of daily function and impairments can lead to injury and quality-of-life limitations. Balance is not well studied in the burn population.

A lumped discrete population balance model for shear flocculation model development.

open access: yes, 1997
In the shear flocculation process, flocculation of ultrafine (size < 10 μm) hydrophobic particle occurs in the presence of a high shear field. Hence, it is necessary to consider both processes of coalescence and breakage, while modelling shear ...

Single-species metapopulation dynamics : A structured model

open access: yes, 1992
We describe and analyse a general metapopulation model, which consists of a model of local dynamics within a habitat patch, and balance equations for dispersing individuals and the metapopulation.

Aging Is a Key Driver for Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a classical age‐related hematologic malignancy, and a key driver of AML is aging, which profoundly regulates intrinsic factors such as genomic instability, epigenetic reprogramming, and metabolic dysregulation, and alters bone marrow microenvironment.

Risk Prediction Models for Recurrence After Curative Treatment of Early‐Stage or Locally Advanced Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This systematic review synthesizes prognostic models for survival and recurrence in resected non‐small cell lung cancer. While many models demonstrate moderate to good discrimination, few are externally validated and reporting quality is variable, limiting clinical applicability and highlighting the need for robust, transparent model development ...
